A plane carrying six people crashed in the mountains of northeastern Afghanistan while en route to Moscow.
The Russian Civil Aviation Agency Rosaviatsia said on January 21 that the chartered plane, traveling from India through Uzbekistan to Moscow, disappeared from radar screens while flying over Afghanistan on the night of January 20. The plane was a Dassault Falcon 10, manufactured in France in 1978 and registered in Russia.
"According to preliminary information, there were six people on board: four crew members and two passengers," Rosaviatsia said. Russian media reported that the crew and passengers were all Russian. The two passengers were a married couple, the wife was seriously ill, forcing the husband to charter a flight to get to a medical facility.

A police spokesman for Afghanistan's Badakhshan province said on the same day that they received reports of a plane crash in the province on the night of January 20. Badakhshan province borders China, Tajikistan and Pakistan.
A rescue team has been sent to the crash site, but it is a remote area more than 200 kilometers from the provincial capital Fayzabad and will take 12 hours to reach, according to Zabihullah Amiri, a spokesman for the Badakhshan provincial government.
Russian authorities announced the opening of a criminal investigation to determine whether there were any violations of safety rules.
