(CLO) Taliban Refugee Minister Khalil Haqqani was killed in a suicide bombing suspected to have been carried out by the terrorist organization ISIS (IS) in the Afghan capital Kabul on December 11.

Mr Haqqani was killed while signing paperwork at the Refugee Ministry compound. The suicide bomber, disguised as a visitor, detonated his explosives as Mr Haqqani worked. Mr Haqqani's nephew, Anas Haqqani, added that the attack also killed at least six other people.

In a statement released by the Taliban, a spokesman expressed “deep sorrow” over the incident. The Taliban criticized ISIS, calling it a “cowardly attack” and condemned the terrorist group for “pretending to be Muslims and calling other Muslims infidels.” ISIS has not yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Minister Khalil Haqqani is a key figure in the Taliban and the uncle of Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani, head of the Haqqani network. The bombing was the most senior Taliban figure since the group returned to power in Afghanistan three years ago.

Khalil Haqqani was listed as a global terrorist by the US in 2011 and has been sanctioned by the United Nations. The Haqqani network has been prominent in major attacks in Afghanistan in previous years and continues to operate independently despite being under the auspices of the Taliban.
