Through monitoring and evaluating the dengue fever (DF) epidemic situation in the world, in the country as well as in Hanoi over the past years, Dr. Tran Thi Nhi Ha, Director of the Hanoi Department of Health, said: "The health sector believes that the dengue fever situation this year will have complicated developments and the prevention of dengue fever will face many difficulties because the disease is on the rise in many countries and in many provinces in the country. The current climate conditions of lots of sunshine and lots of rain are favorable for the vector that transmits the disease, Aedes mosquitoes, to breed and develop."

Local leaders and health officials instruct people to remove stagnant water sources to prevent mosquito breeding.

Notably, the living habits of people in some places are not good, creating conditions for Aedes mosquitoes to develop, such as: uncollected waste, storing rainwater, domestic water, water for watering plants in tanks, barrels, buckets, pots, etc.; households growing ornamental plants create water containers, which are very favorable conditions for dengue mosquitoes to lay eggs and larvae to develop. In addition, the urbanization process and unfinished construction sites are also places with conditions for disease-transmitting mosquitoes to develop.

The leaders of the Hanoi Department of Health also noted that the number of people from other provinces and districts who come to rent accommodation in the inner city and suburban districts every year is very large. Along with temporary living conditions such as: sleeping without mosquito nets, not paying attention to collecting waste; unstable housing, not knowing and not implementing epidemic prevention activities, this group is more likely to get sick. Meanwhile, mobilizing the community and human resources for mosquito larvae eradication activities and spraying chemicals in many places is still difficult, leading to the handling of the epidemic not being thorough, the epidemic is still complicated and prolonged.

At the launching ceremony in response to ASEAN Dengue Prevention Day (organized by the Hanoi Department of Health on the morning of June 12), Dr. Tran Thi Nhi Ha requested that districts, towns and cities proactively and actively implement synchronous measures to prevent and control dengue fever, focusing on drastically eliminating mosquitoes and larvae; ensuring funding, supplies, equipment and chemicals to kill mosquitoes and insects using local resources. Focus on controlling dengue fever in high-risk areas such as: places with old outbreaks, many rental houses, construction sites; propagandizing, mobilizing and creating a habit of maintaining mosquito larvae extermination activities in and around the house every week at households; at agencies, enterprises, schools of each student, each staff member and each person in the area.

"People need to immediately notify the local health station when they have a high fever for more than 2 days to receive instructions, examination, treatment and implementation of epidemic prevention measures in the community. Absolutely do not self-treat at home to avoid serious complications that increase the risk of death," Dr. Tran Thi Nhi Ha noted.
