On June 20, social media shared images of broken and collapsed bridge girders at the North-South Expressway construction project through Nghe An province. Among the bridge girders that were erected, 2 of them collapsed and broke in half.
This image quickly attracted public attention, most people expressed doubts about the construction quality of this key project.
On the same afternoon, speaking with VietNamNet, the executive director of Truong Son Construction Corporation, the contractor of the North-South Expressway, confirmed that the above incident happened more than a month ago.
According to the construction unit leader, the bridge girder collapse incident fortunately caused no casualties. The incident occurred in the section passing through Nghi Phuong commune (Nghi Loc district, Nghe An province). The cause was that while transporting and assembling the girders onto the bridge abutment, the workers were not careful and collided with each other.
“The newly lifted bridge girders collided with the existing girders, causing them to collapse. The weather was extremely hot and sunny, so the workers took advantage of the time and tried their best to complete the construction, but due to improper operation, the unfortunate incident occurred,” the leader informed.
Each bridge girder is about 38m long and weighs 60-70 tons. The construction unit said that the two damaged girders will be removed, the remaining three girders have been dismantled, awaiting quality inspection, and the responsibility of those involved will be considered.
“Nghe An Provincial Police have investigated and determined that the unit followed the approved design and method. The fault lies with the workers’ actions in placing the bridge girders,” the leader shared.
A source said the collapse of the bridge girder occurred in the early afternoon of May 19. All bridge girders had to be replaced and removed from the scene.
