During the resistance war against French colonialism, Nam Dinh had many heroic sons who died in the cause of national liberation. Martyr Dang Thi Kim, Hanh Thien village, Xuan Hong commune (Xuan Truong) was an outstanding daughter, who was captured and brutally tortured by the enemy but remained steadfast and indomitable, "Even when the enemy interrogated and tortured her. Gritting her teeth, she would rather die than leave her Party." The enemy ordered her to be beheaded, and she died at the age of 19! Her life philosophy and revolutionary qualities of "Living for the Party, never leaving the Party in death" are a shining example of the patriotic and revolutionary tradition of "Determined to die for the Fatherland, determined to live" for generations to learn and follow. On April 27, 2012, the President signed a decision to posthumously award the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces (LLVTND) to martyr Dang Thi Kim.

Keep the oath before the Party
July, the month of "Repaying gratitude", "When drinking water, remember its source" is an occasion for every Vietnamese citizen to remember and pay tribute to the heroic martyrs who bravely died for the cause of national liberation and unification. Lighting incense at the grave - the resting place of martyr, Hero Dang Thi Kim in her hometown of Xuan Hong, we were moved by the martyr's relatives' stories about the revolutionary career of Hero Dang Thi Kim.
Ms. Dang Thi Kim (commonly known as Dang Thi Oanh) was born on December 19, 1929 in a poor civil servant family in Hanh Thien village. She was the niece of General Secretary Truong Chinh. In 1945, she went to Nha Trang to live with her uncle, Mr. Nguyen Tu Te, who worked as a pharmacist and was a secret base for comrade Nguyen Minh Vy (later the first Chairman of the Administrative Resistance Committee of Khanh Hoa province). At the age of 16, she became aware of the revolution and joined the resistance; at the age of 17, Ms. Dang Thi Kim was honored to be admitted to the Indochinese Communist Party due to her outstanding achievements of "completing every task", being intelligent and brave in completing every task assigned by the organization.
After a period of time in charge of propaganda for the Liberation Army operating secretly in Nha Trang city and neighboring areas, in July 1946, she was appointed to the Executive Committee of the Nha Trang Women's National Salvation Association. With her revolutionary enthusiasm and quickness, closeness to the masses, she rebuilt the revolutionary bases in Ward 3 (also known as Roc Rau Muong), one of the strong bases in Khanh Hoa province. She and a number of comrades organized and led the demonstration on October 30, 1946, demanding that the French Government implement the Provisional Agreement of September 14, 1946. The demonstration caused a great resonance in the locality, promoting the revolutionary movement to a new height, the people trusted the Resistance Government, and the enemy was confused and afraid. In November 1946, she was assigned by the Khanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee to rebuild the mass base in Hoa Tan, Suoi Dau, now in Cam Lam district (Khanh Hoa). In just a short time, she built and connected the base, then handed it over to another comrade to take charge of, and returned to Nha Trang to work. In early 1947, the Provincial Party Committee decided to add her to the Provisional Committee of the Nha Trang City Party Committee.
In early 1948, the enemy intensified their pursuit, sweeps, and intense terror; a number of cadres were arrested and killed; young female party member Dang Thi Kim continued to stick to the area, intelligently and courageously "blossoming in the heart of the enemy". To protect the safety of the base and cadres, Khanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee decided to send her to Vinh Xuong district to work with a number of local cadres to build a base in Xuan Hai commune, in order to create a favorable area for operations in Nha Trang. Here, she was appointed to the Resistance - Administration Committee and was a member of the Xuan Hai commune Party Committee. In a short time, she was able to build Women's organizations, Farmers' Associations, and a female guerrilla squad to participate in guarding, protecting, and guiding the cadres of the Special Forces Team to operate, and to supply food and medicine to the war zone.
In mid-1948, the revolutionary bases in Nha Trang were restored, and the Khanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee decided to send her back to work in Nha Trang city. During this time, she married comrade Truong An, who was then the provisional Deputy Secretary (later Secretary) of the Khanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee. In August 1948, while attending a conference, she and two comrades took a boat across the strait from Nha Trang to Vinh Xuong resistance base and were unfortunately captured by the enemy.
"Determined to die for the Fatherland, determined to live"
Mr. Dang Vu Quang Huyen, the younger brother of Martyr Dang Thi Kim, said: When she was captured, because there was a traitor in our ranks, the enemy knew her husband's position and name. They considered her a "special" prisoner and used many brutal torture methods such as electric shock until she vomited blood, hanging her high and then immersing her in water (at this time she was about 3 months pregnant). After each "death and resurrection" torture, the enemy interrogated: "Where is the provincial war zone?", "What is your husband's name, is it Truong An?", "Where is the mass base in Xuan Hai commune?"... but she refused to give any information. Unable to subdue her, the enemy sent a legionnaire into the cell to rape her, then strangled her, stuffed a rag in her mouth, put her in a sack, put her in a car and took her to the coastal pine forest south of Nha Trang for execution. That year, she was only 19 years old.

Mr. Dang Vu Quang Huyen added: Later, the soldier who led Ms. Dang Thi Kim to execution secretly contacted the revolutionary side and recounted: “Before being murdered, despite the enemy’s brutal torture, she poured out words of hatred for the enemy; one of them put a gun to her ear and asked what she wanted to say before dying. She calmly said: “If you consider me guilty, then kill me, but the child in my womb is innocent, let me give birth and then kill him...”. The enemy intended to shoot her right there, but they were afraid that the gunshots might disturb the local people, where she had worked and had a great influence, so they barbarically cut her throat... Perhaps her heroic death terrified the young French officer. That very night, he wrote a letter asking to return home.
More than 60 years after the day Ms. Kim (Ms. Oanh) sacrificed, in 2008, when constructing a drainage system in alley 74, Tran Phu street, Nha Trang city, the construction unit discovered three sets of remains and moved them to the people's cemetery on Ru Ri pass - north of Nha Trang city. Those are graves number 159, 160, 161. The Vietnam Institute of Science and Technology has the results of gene identification and determined that the remains of grave number 160 are those of Martyr Dang Thi Kim. In December 2009, the family brought the remains of Martyr Dang Thi Kim to rest in her hometown of Hanh Thien, Xuan Hong commune.
Moved by her heroic sacrifice, the late Professor - Hero of Labor Dang Vu Khieu gave her a parallel sentence:
“Forgetting oneself for the country, years have not yet dried the blue blood
Returning home to bury the remains, the wind and rain still echo the sound of the Golden Oriole.
In recognition of the heroic sacrifice of young party member Dang Thi Kim, in 1957 the Government granted her a Certificate of National Merit and in 1961 the State posthumously awarded her the Third Class Resistance Medal. In 2012, the President signed Decision No. 545/QD-CTN to posthumously award the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces to Martyr Dang Thi Kim. Currently, in Long Phuoc ward, Nha Trang city (Khanh Hoa), there is a street named after Martyr, Hero of the People's Armed Forces Dang Thi Kim. |
