Two months before the new president took office, the US signed the General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA) with the Philippines.
The agreement covers intelligence sharing that Washington has only signed with a few special allies and strategic partners or with partners with whom the US has special strategic interests in certain areas. That shows how much Washington values Manila.
GSOMIA is not only about exchanging military intelligence but also about accessing modern military techniques and advanced military technology. Through this, in a short period of time, the Philippines can significantly improve its defense capabilities and military potential. The stronger the Philippines is in these two aspects, the more useful it will be to the US in its strategy in the Indo-Pacific in general and its strategic calculations aimed at China. Manila is also in tension with Beijing in the East Sea.
Through this, Manila can enhance its military and defense potential, access and use modern American military technology and techniques, as well as a very close, trustworthy and extensive alliance with Washington in politics, military, defense and security. These things help the Philippines improve its position and strengthen its strength in handling conflicts with China.
China cannot help but be deeply concerned, even though it has not shown it in its public reaction to this new alliance between the United States and the Philippines. What China cannot ignore is that the current and incoming US presidents have many different views on domestic and foreign affairs, but they do not fundamentally differ on China and therefore on the US alliance and partnership with the Philippines.
