Russia makes new progress in Kursk?

The Russian Defense Ministry announced on March 11 that a Russian Su-34 bomber had bombed Ukrainian positions and troops in Russia's Kursk region, according to TASS news agency. After receiving confirmation based on reconnaissance data that the targets had been destroyed, "the crew returned safely to the airfield," according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

The Russian Defense Ministry also announced that its military had made major new advances in Kursk, accelerating efforts to push back Ukrainian forces that have held part of Russian territory since August 2024.

Russia said its forces had recaptured dozens of settlements and more than 100 square kilometers of territory in the latest offensive, which came after the situation in Ukraine had deteriorated dramatically in recent days, according to Reuters.

Russia launches massive attack on Kursk ahead of US-Ukraine talks

Pro-Moscow military blogger Yuri Podolyaka reported that Russian forces had taken control of the outskirts of the town of Sudzha, near the border with Ukraine, and that Ukrainian troops were retreating into their territory.

As of the evening of March 11, there was no information about Ukraine’s reaction to the Russian Defense Ministry’s statement. On March 10, Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi denied that Ukrainian soldiers fighting in Kursk were at risk of being surrounded. Mr. Syrskyi affirmed that the situation was under control and Ukrainian forces had withdrawn.

Ukrainian troops took control of at least 1,300 square kilometers of Kursk Oblast in August 2024. However, by mid-February, Russia had retaken at least 800 square kilometers of territory in Kursk. In recent days, Russia has launched a major multi-pronged offensive aimed at cutting off Ukraine’s supply lines and potential escape routes, according to Reuters.

US, Ukraine discuss partial ceasefire

Ukraine said bilateral talks with the US that began in the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah on March 11 were "constructive", discussing a partial ceasefire with Russia, according to AFP.

The talks were attended by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Ukrainian counterpart Andriy Sybiga, as US President Donald Trump increased pressure on Ukraine to end the more than three-year Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Mr. Zelensky wrote a letter of apology, Mr. Trump's team remained stubborn

The US-Ukraine talks come after a heated exchange between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on February 28. The US subsequently suspended military aid to Ukraine, intelligence sharing and access to satellite imagery.

Mr. Zelensky left the White House on February 28 without signing the minerals deal with the U.S. Mr. Zelensky said he was still willing to sign the minerals deal, while Mr. Rubio said the deal would not be the focus of the talks in Jeddah.

Asked whether Ukraine's drone attacks on 10 Russian provinces on the night of March 10 and early March 11 could derail peace talks, Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov replied: "There are no (peace) talks yet, so nothing can be disrupted here."
