Mr. Dang Anh Hoang's family in Hieu Phong village, Binh Tan commune, Phu Rieng district has 4 hectares of rubber trees that have been harvested for decades. Realizing that durian trees are much more economically efficient, about 8 years ago, when the family's economy was temporarily stable, he converted 1 hectare of rubber trees to grow durian trees. 5 years later, the durian trees were harvested and the initial construction capital was gradually recovered. For more than a year, he continued to convert 1 hectare of rubber trees to grow Thai durian trees. Mr. Hoang said: If the financial resources are abundant, a large area can be converted at once, otherwise, it can be converted in batches to ensure a regular source of income.

According to Mr. Hoang, before that, his family planted the Ri6 durian variety, although it was highly effective, it was not as good as the Thai durian variety, because the price of Thai durian was always 20,000 VND/kg higher. Therefore, recently, he converted 1 hectare of rubber to grow Thai durian and when the Thai durian crop was harvested, he would continue to convert the remaining 2 hectares of rubber. "Changing the crop structure in the direction of "taking short-term to support long-term" is very safe, earning from one side to invest in the other. 1 hectare of Ri6 durian has only been harvested for 3 years but has earned more than 1 billion VND/3 crops, while if Thai durian could earn 3 billion VND/3 crops. Compared to rubber and cashew, the income from durian is many times higher" - Mr. Hoang affirmed.

Mr. Dang Anh Hoang in Hieu Phong village, Binh Tan commune, Phu Rieng district takes care of his family's 8-year-old durian tree.

From old, low-yield orchards with low and unstable output prices, many households have boldly switched to growing durian. In Binh Tan commune alone, farmers have converted about 80 hectares of rubber and cashew trees to grow durian, and many areas have now yielded harvests with high efficiency and safety.

Vice President of the Farmers' Association of Binh Tan Commune, Ha Thi Thuy Dung, said: To increase income, the Farmers' Association of the Commune encourages farmers to convert old cashew trees and low-yield rubber trees to durian trees. Because 1 hectare of old cashew trees only brings in an income of 30 million VND, while 1 hectare of durian brings in more than 300 million VND, 10 times more. However, the association directs farmers not to convert massively at the same time but to do it in stages, not to plant one type of tree but to plant many types of trees to maintain income, ensure safety, and respond to complex market developments like today.

Leaders of Binh Tan commune visited the 8-year-old durian growing model of Mr. Dang Anh Hoang's family.

According to farmers, the economic efficiency of durian trees is many times higher than that of cashew, pepper and rubber trees. However, to be successful, not everyone can do it, but it depends on many factors such as soil, irrigation water source, care techniques, especially financial resources, in which it is necessary to implement the model of "taking short-term to support long-term".

“The profit from durian is obvious, but if you have a stable cash flow, you should invest. If not, don’t rush. Because if you don’t have money to buy fertilizer or pesticides for cashew or rubber trees this month, you can wait until next month, but not for durian trees. Because durian trees are very “difficult”, fertilizing and spraying pesticides must be done periodically, without delay. When you detect fungus, you must buy pesticides immediately. If you are just 3 days late, you will lose a lot of money. Therefore, people need to calculate carefully before switching to and investing in this “difficult” crop,” Mr. Hoang shared.
