Apple's senior executives, including Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering, are expressing concern as the delay of Apple Intelligence artificial intelligence (AI) is seen as a "communications disaster" for the company in front of both the press and users.
Apple Intelligence was first announced at the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) as a major step toward upgrading Siri and integrating AI more deeply into Apple's ecosystem. The company originally planned to launch the advanced features alongside the iPhone 16 series in the fall of 2024. However, the plan has changed several times. The first delay was when the company said Apple Intelligence would appear in the iOS 18.1 update, which is expected to be released in late 2024.
Apple promotes and promises a lot about artificial intelligence but so far it has "gone nowhere"
The company then pushed back the launch date to iOS 18.4, which was expected in the spring of 2025. But in its latest announcement, the "bitten apple" confirmed that the upgraded Siri AI features will not be available until 2026, pushing back the roadmap by about another year.
This announcement is like a "drink of cold water" because iPhone 16 series users will not get what they paid for. At the same time, PhoneArena assessed that this delay will make "by the time Apple sets foot in the AI race, competitors have already crossed the finish line".
The delay has also sparked criticism from the user community and technology experts, as Apple is famous for launching products on time and consistently. In fact, Apple is falling behind in the AI race compared to direct competitors such as Google (with Google Assistant, Gemini) or Microsoft (with Copilot supported by OpenAI), Samsung (Galaxy AI)... not to mention xAI (Grok), OpenAI with ChatGPT which is too famous. Along with that, China is also rising strongly with DeepSeek or recently Manus.
Mark Gurman, a technology journalist from Bloomberg, revealed that Apple's AI development team believes that a fully conversational version of Siri - similar to ChatGPT - will not be possible until 2027. This further highlights the risk of Apple being left behind in the field of AI, which is developing at a dizzying pace.
The delay not only tarnishes Apple’s image, but also raises questions about the company’s ability to keep up with new technology trends. Users have expressed frustration that Siri, one of the first virtual assistants on the market, is now so far behind its competitors in terms of features.
