Last year, Google encouraged users to switch to Timeline on the Google Maps mobile app, where their travel history would be stored on that specific device. Now, the company has accelerated the push for users to transfer their trip history data to Timeline before it is completely deleted when the migration deadline ends.
Google Maps users need to pay attention to reset their Timeline
According to reports on Reddit from users like ashtreylil and hardrivethrutown , Google has been making the switch more and more frequently over the past few days. Many people have commented with similar experiences, saying they can't access any of their past events on their Timeline, nor can they find backups stored in the cloud. For those who regularly use Timeline to reminisce about their travels, losing years of data is a huge blow.
The good news, however, is that there’s no confirmed information that Timeline data has been completely removed. It’s possible that this was just a temporary glitch that affected user access. Some people have reported that their Timeline has returned after disappearing, and not all Google Maps users have been affected in the same way.
What should Google Maps users do?
However, PhoneArena said users should update their Timeline on Google Maps before the deadline of June 9, 2025, otherwise data about previous routes and visits will be deleted.
Users have multiple options for retaining Timeline data on Google Maps
Based on the setup image, users will have the option to keep Timeline data until they delete it themselves or set it to automatically delete after 3 months, 18 months, or 36 months. Additionally, they can also decide to turn off the Timeline feature and permanently delete all saved information.
If you think of Timeline as just another way for Google to dig into your history and decide to turn it off, remember that it's a feature that allows Google Maps to show you personalized routes you've taken, helping you get to your destination faster. To activate Timeline, you'll need to turn on Location History and make sure your Google Maps app is up to date.
