People in Tan Phong town, Quang Xuong district are busy harvesting red carp, in time for the day the Kitchen Gods return to heaven.
As usual, every year on the 20th, 21st, and 22nd of the 12th lunar month, people in Tan Phong town, Quang Xuong district (Thanh Hoa) are busy harvesting red carp - the type of fish people buy to worship on the 23rd day of the lunar calendar to send the Kitchen Gods to heaven.
For generations, people in Tan Hau, Tan Co, and Bai Truc streets have continued the tradition of raising fingerlings and small red carps for sale at the end of the year. Although this is a traditional occupation, it has now brought great economic benefits to the people.
As one of the largest fish farming households in Bai Truc, Mr. Nguyen Van Loan (born in 1962) said: I was born knowing that my family raised fish. Although it is a traditional profession, it is also a profession that develops the family's economy.
"This year's fish prices are higher than previous years because the North was affected by storm No. 3, many households have no fish to sell. This year, my family harvested about 2 tons of fish and traders came to buy almost all of them. The amount of money earned is about 300 million VND," said Mr. Loan.
Unlike every year when he traveled all the way to Hai Phong to buy fish to sell wholesale, Mr. Nguyen Van Ngoc (57 years old, in Hau Loc district, Thanh Hoa province) said: I came here to order 200 kg of red carp to resell to others at a price of about 140 thousand VND/kg. The fish in Quang Xuong are beautiful, with bright colors, so many people buy them.
While pulling the net to catch fish to sell to traders, Mr. Nguyen Van Son (62 years old, living in Bai Truc street) shared: This year, my family harvested 2 tons of red carp. In the past few days, traders from everywhere have come to buy almost all of them. This morning, a taxi came to buy 100 kg to sell retail to people on the occasion of Ong Cong and Ong Tao. The price of fish sold at the pond to traders is about 100-120 thousand VND/kg.
According to the locals, raising fingerlings combined with Ong Cong and Ong Tao fish brings in 8 times more profit than growing rice. On average, if one sao of rice yields about 14 million VND (after deducting the cost of seeds, materials and care), then one sao of fish farming yields 25 million VND while the cost is very low.
Talking to Giao thong Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Van Hung - Vice Chairman of Tan Phong Town People's Committee said: Breeding and selling Ong Cong and Ong Tao fish is mainly in Tan Hau, Tan Co and Bai Truc streets on an area of 10 hectares. This year, there are about 70 households raising fish and the wholesale price ranges from 120 - 150 thousand/kg, people's income is stable.
According to Mr. Hung, in recent years, local aquaculture models such as: fish fry, meat fish, Ong Cong fish, Ong Tao fish, snail farming, banana fish, frog farming, lotus growing, vegetable growing... have high productivity, quite large economic efficiency, ensuring food hygiene and safety.
