Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên19/02/2025

According to the National Institute of Malaria, Parasitology and Entomology (NIMPE), Ministry of Health, each year about 20,000 people infected with dog and cat roundworm larvae are detected and treated nationwide.

The National Hospital for Tropical Diseases (Hanoi) has just reported a case of hospitalization due to parasitic worm infection from a domestic dog. The patient is a 65-year-old female from Quang Ninh.

Before being hospitalized, at home, the patient initially had severe abdominal pain, continuous bowel movements from afternoon to evening (about 4 hours), with the number of bowel movements up to 25 - 26 times. After that, the patient had skin lesions, itchy rashes and circular lines on the arms and body, accompanied by signs of worms moving under the skin.

Dog and cat roundworm larvae migrate under the skin of a patient during hospitalization.

At the hospital, the patient tested positive for Fasciola hepatica and Toxocara spp. The test showed that the body's allergic reaction markers had spiked to 1,652 IU/mL, more than 16 times higher than normal (less than 100 IU/mL), indicating that the patient's body was reacting strongly to the parasitic infection. In-depth testing also revealed inflammation caused by parasitic worms.

Through investigation, it was found that the patient's family raised a large dog, weighing about 25 kg. Notably, this dog had shown signs of vomiting worms, but the family did not pay attention and still had direct contact with the dog without using protective measures such as gloves or shoes when cleaning. This could be the main cause of the patient's parasitic infection.

The patient is now stable after a week of treatment. After discharge, the patient needs to be re-examined at least 3 times within 6 months to monitor the effectiveness of treatment and the risk of reinfection.

To prevent roundworm disease in dogs and cats, according to Dr. Tran Thi Hai Ninh, Head of the Department of Internal Medicine, Central Hospital of Tropical Diseases, pet owners need to pay special attention to deworming dogs and cats every 6 months, and also need to clean the living environment of dogs and cats. When in contact with pets, especially when cleaning feces, always use gloves and shoes to limit the risk of infection. Always make sure to wash clothes and tools thoroughly after contact with pets or areas at risk of worm infection. Regularly clean the floor with antiseptic solutions. Wash hands thoroughly before eating...
