For the past 25 years, Mr. Hung has helped the community obtain quality seeds and create rice varieties that adapt to climate change. “Mr. Hung is 71 years old this year and has been involved in hybridization and testing rice varieties for 25 years. Passionate about agriculture since childhood, he has always sought innovative methods to increase crop yields, including high-quality rice varieties that are suitable for climate change and local soil conditions to serve export…” - Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nam (farmer in Nui Voi ward, Tinh Bien town) shared.

Mr. Hung has been involved in the profession of hybridizing and testing rice varieties since 1999, when he participated in a certified breeding training course. From here, he began his passionate journey by taking purebred varieties from research institutes and universities to multiply into certified varieties, providing them to farmers in the community.

Achievements

The first rice variety Mr. Hung produced and shared with local farmers was the MTL250 variety. Over the past time, thanks to his perseverance and constant learning, Mr. Hung has approached new rice varieties provided by institutes and schools, including the Mekong Delta Development Research Institute. Currently, he is the Head of the Nui Voi Commune Seedling Group. Each year, his seed group produces and supplies about 200 tons of rice seeds to the community, of which his family supplies about 40 tons.

The rice varieties bred by Mr. Hung have outstanding characteristics, such as: strong plants, short-term, high yield, suitable for local soil conditions. The rice varieties developed by him all have the symbol NV, the abbreviation of Elephant Mountain - the place where he was born and spent his whole life. Among the more than 40 purebred rice varieties successfully researched by him, there are 3 outstanding and recognized varieties, including: AG1 rice variety (recognized for circulation by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development under Decision 273/QD-TT-VPPN, dated October 4, 2022); NV1 rice variety (allowed for trial production by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development under Decision 387/QD-TT-CLT, dated August 17, 2012), with a growing period of 95 - 100 days; ND1 rice variety, granted a New Plant Variety Protection Certificate under Decision 316/QD-TT-VPBH, dated July 3, 2024. The above rice varieties are highly appreciated by the market for their delicious rice quality, clear grains, light aroma and soft rice.

“Currently, I am researching to create new rice varieties that adapt to climate change. Through that, I hope to continue to coordinate with research agencies to create more rice varieties that are more resistant to the weather, to supplement the province's variety structure, contributing to improving the quality of An Giang rice,” Mr. Hung confided.
