'Priceless treasure' of Vietnamese science

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên07/08/2023

Attending the ceremony were leaders of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the People's Committee of Binh Dinh province, and hundreds of domestic and international scientists. Among them were Professor Gerard 't Hooft (Utrecht University, Netherlands), winner of the 1999 Nobel Prize in Physics; Professor Dam Thanh Son (University of Chicago, USA)...

ENHANCE VN'S POSITION

The Rencontres du Vietnam Association was founded in France in 1993 by Professor Tran Thanh Van (a Vietnamese expatriate in France) to connect cooperation, support and assistance to contribute to the development of science and higher education in Vietnam. In 2012, this association became an official partner of UNESCO.

In August 2008, Professor Tran Thanh Van (Chairman of the Rencontres du Vietnam Association) and his wife, Professor Le Kim Ngoc (Chairman of the Association for the Protection of Vietnamese Children in France) came to Quy Nhon City to meet with leaders of the People's Committee of Binh Dinh Province to survey the implementation of the ICISE project. With the approval and support of the Prime Minister and central ministries, at the end of 2011, the Rencontres du Vietnam Association and the People's Committee of Binh Dinh Province held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of ICISE. This center was inaugurated and put into use on August 12, 2013.

International Center for Interdisciplinary Science and Education (ICISE) in Quy Nhon City

As of 2023, Rencontres du Vietnam and ICISE have organized nearly 150 high-quality international scientific conferences, more than 45 specialized science schools in Binh Dinh with nearly 10,000 scientists from countries and territories participating. Among them, there are 18 Nobel professors, 2 professors winning the Fields Medal (considered the Nobel Prize in Mathematics), 2 professors winning the Kavli Prize (the highest award in astronomy), 1 professor winning the Shaw Prize (considered the Eastern Nobel Prize), 1 professor winning the Dirac Prize...

In addition to international conferences and scientific seminars, Rencontres du Vietnam also organizes public scientific presentations for students and the public who love science; online or in-person exchanges with Nobel Prize-winning professors and outstanding Vietnamese students...

Professor Tran Thanh Van said that he and his wife invested in building ICISE because they wanted to have a place to develop science and education, help Vietnamese students and young scientists integrate into the international scientific community, and provide opportunities for young generations of Vietnam to improve their level of understanding through attending meetings and sharing ideas with highly qualified international colleagues. ICISE has been, is and will become a destination for science, a bright spot not only for Vietnam but also for the whole Southeast Asia region, enhancing the position and image of Binh Dinh and Vietnam in the eyes of international friends.

With its active contributions to Vietnamese and world science, ICISE has received support from the International Council for High-Level Sponsorship of Science, including 8 Nobel Prize-winning scientists.

CONTRIBUTE TO BUILDING SCIENTIFIC CITY

In 2016, from the suggestion of Professor Jerome Friedman (Nobel Prize in Physics 1990), the Rencontres du Vietnam Association established the IFIRSE Research Institute, a private basic research institute under ICISE. The goal of this research institute is to bridge Vietnamese science with the world, attracting young Vietnamese scientists and international scientists to work to promote the intellectual resources of thousands of international scientists at ICISE each year.

Currently, IFIRSE has established 3 research groups, including: theoretical physics (2017), neutrino physics (2018), SAGI astrophysics (2022). Up to now, IFIRSE has initially established a laboratory with equipment donated by Japanese professors and self-equipped by ICISE to be able to start doing some small experiments on neutrinos. IFIRSE has received attention and agreement to become a member of the scientific council from prestigious scientists around the world, including Professor Dam Thanh Son.

The Rencontres du Vietnam and international scientists have also proposed the idea of supporting the People's Committee of Binh Dinh province to build and operate a scientific space complex in Quy Nhon city, including: a planetarium, a science discovery area and a popular astronomical observatory. This is the first mass science complex in Vietnam, the second in Southeast Asia, bringing science to the masses and developing a love of science for the people, especially the youth, serving both science education and developing science tourism.

Also from the suggestion of Professor Tran Thanh Van and scientists, Binh Dinh Provincial People's Committee built the Quy Hoa Science Urban Area project with the goal of being a multifunctional urban area, playing an important role in the socio-economic development of the Central Highlands and the whole country, aiming to develop Quy Nhon into a leading science city of Vietnam.

This scientific urban area will be a place for the world's leading scientists to exchange, promote intelligence in scientific research, link training with scientific research, link technology development activities with production, business and services; attract domestic and foreign resources, create motivation to promote scientific development...

Up to now, Binh Dinh has attracted FPT Corporation and TMA Solutions Company, the leading software companies in Vietnam, to invest in the planned area for Quy Hoa Science Urban Area.

A place that should definitely be considered a world scientific heritage.

In a letter dated December 29, 2020 sent to the Rencontres du Vietnam Association accepting to join the High-Level International Council for Scientific Sponsorship of ICISE, Professor Sheldon Lee Glashow (Harvard University, USA), Nobel Prize in Physics 1979, wrote: "ICISE has become a priceless treasure and will forever retain its value, an indispensable value not only for Vietnamese scientists and students but also for scientists, engineers, students, and educators around the world. ICISE has grown to become a place that must certainly be considered a world scientific heritage." ( Excerpt from ICISE documents )
