After graduating from the Faculty of Hydrology and Environment, Thuyloi University in 1993, Ms. Phan Thi Thanh Hang continued her passion for researching water quality improvement models by continuing her studies at Yamanashi University, Japan in 2011; Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium in 1997; Netherlands Institute of Water Resources Engineering in 2006 and Sydney University of Technology, Australia in 2017... These experiences helped her improve her knowledge, creating a solid foundation for building advanced research methods, contributing to improving the capacity of her team.

During her career, Associate Professor, Dr. Phan Thi Thanh Hang has chaired and participated in more than 50 topics and projects at all levels, contributing to solving urgent issues related to the environment and water resources. One of the outstanding topics is the State-level topic on "Scientific basis, orientation and solutions for sustainable socio-economic development of Ly Son and Phu Quy island districts" in 2019, contributing to building sustainable solutions, ensuring security and defense for the coastal island system of Vietnam. This study emphasizes the importance of water resources and marine ecosystems in the sustainable development of island areas, and at the same time proposes comprehensive solutions to protect water resources against the challenges of climate change and local economic development.

Associate Professor, Dr. Phan Thi Thanh Hang shared: “On a trip to Tam Duong, Lai Chau, I visited a family whose water supply was so scarce that they could only bathe once every two months. This experience made me even more determined in my work, becoming a strong source of motivation for me to continue pursuing my passion. For me, each project is a reminder of my responsibility to people in remote areas, helping them improve their lives and have more opportunities for economic development.”

Not only researching rural water resources, Associate Professor, Dr. Phan Thi Thanh Hang also participates deeply in research related to integrated resource management and sustainable development of the Northern coastal region. The research topic "Proposing solutions for integrated coastal zone management for sustainable development of the Northern coastal region - pilot in Thai Binh province" in which she is a key member has contributed scientific management solutions for coastal resources, thereby protecting and sustainably developing sensitive coastal areas against human impacts and climate change.

During her research career, Associate Professor, Dr. Phan Thi Thanh Hang has also published more than 100 articles in prestigious domestic and foreign journals. The articles focus on hot issues such as: Climate change; water resource management and sustainable development; practical solutions to the challenges that Vietnam is facing. In 2023 and 2024 alone, she and her colleagues published 17 scientific articles with many publications in prestigious international journals such as: Water and Climate Change Journal of the International Water Association (IWA), making positive contributions to sustainable development in the field of water resources and marine and island conservation.

In addition to scientific research, Associate Professor, Dr. Phan Thi Thanh Hang also participated in writing books as a researcher, editor and co-editor of 8 important monographs, contributing to raising awareness and providing solutions to current environmental issues. Notably, the book "Model for sustainable development orientation of coastal island districts of Ly Son and Phu Quy" published in 2023 marked a major step forward in research and development orientation for coastal island areas.

Evaluating her female colleague, Dr. Nguyen Manh Ha, Deputy Director in charge of the Institute of Geography, said that Associate Professor, Dr. Phan Thi Thanh Hang has outstanding achievements in scientific research. Associate Professor, Dr. Phan Thi Thanh Hang has been honored to receive many certificates of merit and noble awards. In 2022, she was recognized by the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations as an "Outstanding Scientific and Technological Intellectual".

“As the Head of the Association of Women Intellectuals of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Associate Professor, Dr. Phan Thi Thanh Hang always accompanies the Vietnamese female intellectuals to enhance the role of women in scientific research and bring technology applications into life, contributing positively to the socio-economic development of the country,” Dr. Nguyen Manh Ha affirmed.
