On February 27, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced that his country will not allow the European Union (EU) to impose sanctions on Russia in the nuclear energy sector.

According to him, sanctions could affect Hungary's energy security.
Speaking at a press conference after meeting with Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi, who is visiting Budapest, Mr. Szijjarto emphasized that the government attaches great importance to the development of nuclear energy, operating the Paks nuclear power plant, which is in the second phase of construction under the project of the Russian Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom).
“Therefore, if the sanctions package continues to be in force in the 27-member bloc, we will continue to block provisions affecting the nuclear industry,” Mr. Szijjarto said.
With each discussion of the sanctions package, the EU has tried to include the nuclear energy sector.
So far, we have prevented this and will not allow sanctions against the nuclear industry in Europe in the future.”
In 2024, Hungary reached an agreement with Brussels to exempt the Paks-2 project from all European sanctions against Moscow.
The exemption was specified in the 14th package of EU sanctions against Russia adopted in June last year.
However, US sanctions against Rosatom and its subsidiaries have caused significant damage to the Hungarian project.
