*Japan, Poland agree on support plan for Ukraine: Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya and his Polish counterpart Radoslaw Sikorski on February 28 agreed on a five-year action plan, pledging to continue “multi-dimensional support” for Ukraine.

Japan and Poland, a NATO member state that shares a border with Ukraine, said the security of Europe and the Indo-Pacific region are “inseparable,” pledging to strengthen cooperation to “recover and rebuild” Ukraine. (Kyodo)

*Beijing calls on Seoul to “stop fabricating” stories about China: Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian on February 28 called on relevant individuals in South Korea to stop fabricating and exaggerating false information about Beijing, as well as avoid interfering with and affecting bilateral relations.

Speaking at a regular press conference, when asked about the recent disparaging remarks by the South Korean leader towards China, Mr. Lam Kiem stated that Beijing always adheres to the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries and believes that the South Korean people have enough intelligence and ability to properly handle domestic issues. *Russia-China relations are at their best level in history: Russia's TASS news agency reported that on February 28, Secretary of the Russian Security Council Sergey Shoigu emphasized to Chinese President Xi Jinping that bilateral relations are at an unprecedented high level.

Mr. Shoigu also affirmed that the partnership between the two countries is not directed against other countries. Earlier in the day, Mr. Shoigu held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing,

China and Russia declared an “unlimited” strategic partnership days before Mr Putin sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine in February 2022. (Reuters)

*Australia criticizes Thailand for deporting Uyghurs to China: Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said on February 28 that Australia "strongly disagrees" with Thailand's decision to forcibly transfer 40 Uyghurs to China and has raised concerns about their treatment with the Chinese government.

Foreign Minister Wong stressed that Australia had serious concerns about the human rights situation in Xinjiang and the treatment of Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in China.

*Hungary opposes EU sanctions against Russia in the nuclear energy sector: On February 27, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced that his country will not allow the European Union (EU) to impose sanctions on Russia in the nuclear energy sector. According to him, sanctions could affect Hungary's energy security.

In 2024, Hungary reached an agreement with Brussels to exempt the Paks-2 project from all European sanctions against Russia. This exemption was specified in the 14th package of EU sanctions against Russia adopted in June last year. However, US sanctions against Rosatom and its subsidiaries have caused significant damage to the Hungarian project. (TASS)

*Russia appoints new ambassador to the US: The Russian Foreign Ministry announced on February 28 that the country has appointed veteran diplomat Alexander Darchiev as the new Ambassador to the US, thereby filling the position that has been vacant since last year.

*Romania's government survives no-confidence vote: Romania's pro-European coalition government survived a no-confidence vote in parliament on February 28.

*Israel, Hamas have opposing views on Gaza ceasefire agreement: Two Egyptian security sources said on February 28 that the Israeli delegation in Cairo is trying to reach an agreement to extend phase 1 of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip for another 42 days.

Sources told Reuters that Hamas did not accept the extension and wanted to proceed with the second phase as agreed. Hamas called on the international community to pressure Israel into entering the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire “without delay”, a day before the first phase expires. (Reuters)

*DR Congo accuses Rwanda of plotting a coup: DR Congo Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka has accused Rwanda of planning a coup in the DR Congo but affirmed that the government and people of this country are ready to fight against this plot.

The statement came as Angola-led mediation efforts in the Democratic Republic of Congo collapsed and the M23 armed group resumed attacks in the east. Congolese officials accused Rwanda of supporting the rebel groups and called on the country to withdraw its troops from the territory. However, Rwanda has always denied these accusations. *Russia proposes resuming direct flights to the US: The Russian Foreign Ministry said on February 28 that it had proposed to the US to resume direct flights between the two countries during talks in Istanbul (Turkey) on February 27, where the two sides discussed "many unpleasant issues" in bilateral relations.

In another statement the same day, the Russian Foreign Ministry praised the latest round of talks with the US, calling it a “substantive and constructive” discussion.

*President Donald Trump does not know about the term AUKUS: The Guardian newspaper reported on February 28 that during a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the White House, US President Donald Trump seemed not to know about the term AUKUS when asked about the security agreement between the US, UK and Australia established in 2021.

When asked by reporters if he had discussed AUKUS with the British Prime Minister, the US President did not seem to recognize the acronym of this agreement and asked again: "What does that mean?" *President Trump nominates former Vietnamese-American Colonel as Deputy Secretary of the US Navy: US President Donald Trump announced on the evening of February 27 that he will nominate Mr. Hung Cao, a former Vietnamese-American Navy Colonel, as Deputy Secretary of the US Navy.

In a post on Truth Social, President Trump described Hung Cao as: “The embodiment of the American Dream... With Hung's experience in both combat and at the Pentagon, he will get the job done.”

Hung Cao left Vietnam in 1975 when he was only 4 years old. After living and studying at a French school in West Africa, he and his family settled in Annandale, Virginia (USA) in 1982. During his 25 years of service in the US Navy, he participated in special combat missions in Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia. (Reuters)

*US investigates former administration's clean energy program: The Washington Post reported that the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has questioned Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officials as part of an investigation into the $20 billion program for climate and clean energy projects of former President Joe Biden's administration.

The investigation involves $20 billion in grants under a program launched in 2022 under former President Biden to invest in clean energy technologies.

Previously, EPA chief Lee Zeldin, newly appointed under President Donald Trump, accused the grants in the program of being approved with little oversight and said the agency would try to recover the money from Citibank - the bank tasked with disbursing the funds. (RIA Novosti)

*Nicaragua withdraws from UN Human Rights Council: On February 27, Nicaragua announced its decision to withdraw from the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council, after UN-appointed experts accused the government of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega of widespread repression.

Speaking to reporters, Rosario Murillo, wife of President Daniel Ortega, said the decision to withdraw from the UN Human Rights Council and all related actions were “irreversible”. Ms. Rosario denounced UN agencies for attacking Nicaragua’s sovereignty and “these disrespectful mechanisms have lost the essence of the UN”. (AFP)
