According to economic experts, Vietnam's agricultural sector has made remarkable progress in managing the quality of agricultural products, which are now accepted by international markets.

However, some issues such as quality depth, management, supervision and organization of cultivation, harvesting, processing, etc. still have many loopholes, requiring managers and farmers to carefully review the cultivation process to ensure sustainable requirements.

A recent example is durian, an agricultural export product with a growth advantage for the country’s agriculture, entering the key market of China. From a product that has not been recognized by world and Asian consumers, Vietnamese durian can compete with Thai durian in the world’s second most populous market.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh, Chairman of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, recently, Chinese Customs issued a warning about yellow O (auramine O) on Vietnamese durian imported into China. Another criterion that is also required to be monitored is cadmium on durian peel.

This affects durian exports to the billion-people market. The problem of toxic substances in exported agricultural products needs to be checked, clarified at each stage, thoroughly handled and not spread to the industry.

Some agricultural export enterprises believe that if farmers do well in technical operations, apply science in cultivation, reduce the use of fertilizers, pesticides, etc. during the cultivation process and chemicals before harvest, then the quality of agricultural products will be truly stable and meet safety criteria.

However, the role of traders in organizing the collection and implementation of agricultural export orders is also very important.

Therefore, improving agricultural product quality management skills in each stage must be done strictly to ensure that the source of goods for export is not blocked by importers' regulations.

Mr. Nguyen Van Muoi, Vice President of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, shared that in order to meet the criteria of importers, Vietnamese durian must be able to manage both the production and post-harvest preservation stages. That is, producers must manage the indicators from the input sources of fertilizers and pesticides to ensure that they do not exceed the permitted threshold.

For example, with the EU market, agricultural products must meet all the criteria of this market while ensuring environmental safety for producers in the direction of green development.

Mr. Le Thanh Hoa, Deputy Director of the Department of Quality, Processing and Market Development, emphasized that only by strictly controlling from raw material to processing can Vietnam maintain and develop its market share in this demanding market.

To maintain the European market, all parties need to strengthen quality control from the production stage, instead of just focusing on checking the final product. If factors such as fertilizers, pesticides, and cultivation, preliminary processing, and processing can be fully controlled, the output product will be guaranteed to be safe.

Mr. Ngo Xuan Nam, Deputy Director of the Vietnam SPS Office, realized that consensus and efforts from all parties are needed to ensure compliance with SPS regulations and improve the quality of exported agricultural products and food.

If the management agency makes an effort but the enterprise or cooperative does not make an effort, it will also fail and vice versa.
