On the occasion of the Lunar New Year 2024, while many shops are closed for the holiday, some restaurants still open during the holiday to serve the needs of customers during this time.
Nearly 10 years of selling "through Tet"
For more than ten years, Ms. Bich Thuy (45 years old) has been open for business during Tet for 9 years. Located at 220/5 Le Van Sy, on the days before Tet, the Hue-born owner's beef noodle shop is bustling with customers, many people notice the sign posted on the counter: "The shop serves during Tet!" .
Ms. Thuy's shop has been open during Tet in recent years.
The reason the restaurant owner does not close for Tet is because the demand of customers increases during this time, in previous years the number of customers increased 3-4 times compared to normal times. Each portion of beef noodle soup at Ms. Thuy's restaurant costs 70,000 - 80,000 VND, this year she said the price has increased by 10,000 VND, to 80,000 - 90,000 VND/portion.
She said this increase is reasonable, because to serve the Tet holiday, she has to hire twice as many employees and pay three times as much as usual. The hours at the shop have also increased, instead of usually opening from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. with no breaks, these days she opens until almost midnight.
“In 33 years of living in Saigon, selling beef noodle soup for ten years, I have only been able to return to my hometown twice. After selling Tet, I will take a few days to rest, visit relatives or relax after busy days," she said.
Each portion of beef noodle soup at Ms. Thuy's restaurant increases by 10,000 VND during Tet.
2023 is a difficult year for shops, including Ms. Thuy. She is also nervous, not knowing how business will be this year. However, the owner also believes that when she works with all her heart and dedication to serve, customers will always come to support her.
Mr. Nhat Nam (56 years old, living in District 3) said that he often comes to this beef noodle shop to eat, and because he likes the taste, he has been a "regular customer" for many years. The shop has changed its address 3 times, wherever it moves, he... follows.
“During Tet, I get tired of eating banh tet, banh chung, and braised pork, and there are days when I have to eat out with my family. I also note in my mind which restaurants are open on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd to stop by, because many restaurants will be closed for Tet. It is normal for them to increase their prices by a few thousand, because everything increases,” he commented.
Open 24/7 all year round, including Tet
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Ban, owner of the Thanh Dat Nam Vang noodle chain, said that for many years, his restaurant has been open throughout Tet and 24/7 to serve customers' needs. This year, all 19 of his noodle branches are open, so customers can enjoy the dish at any time.
According to Mr. Ban, in previous years, during Tet, the restaurant had 200-300% more customers than normal times. He hopes that with the current difficult economic situation, the restaurant will still maintain this performance.
Mr. Ban's noodle shop is open 24/7.
“This year, we will increase the price of each portion by 10,000 VND, from the 29th to the 5th of Tet. After that, it will return to the old price. We will also increase the number of employees to meet customer demand, and our Tet salary will also be tripled," the owner added.
For the past 13 years, Mr. Ban, because of being busy with the work of running his restaurant system, has not returned to his hometown to celebrate Tet with his family and relatives. However, he said that when he serves customers well and is highly appreciated by them, it is a great motivation for him. After Tet or at other times of the year, the owner will return to his hometown to visit his family.
Meanwhile, the owner of two Painter Coffee shops located on Tran Quy Khoach Street (District 1) and To Hien Thanh Street (District 10), Mr. Nguyen Manh Cuong (33 years old) also said that since the day he opened the shop until now, every year he has served throughout the Tet holiday to meet the coffee needs of customers at the end and beginning of the year.
Mr. Cuong's coffee shop is bright to welcome Tet.
Currently, the shop has 20 employees, and during the Tet holiday, it opens to welcome guests to come and have fun, take photos, and enjoy drinks. Accordingly, depending on the actual situation, the shop can increase the price by 1,000 - 2,000 VND per drink.
