The Lunar New Year of At Ty 2025 is approaching, currently gardeners and flower villages in Da Nang city are busy taking care of and preparing for the Tet flower season with the expectation of a successful crop.
Recorded at Duong Son flower village (Hoa Chau commune, Hoa Vang district), tens of thousands of Tet flower pots are being diligently cared for by gardeners, closely monitored to promptly handle when there is unfavorable weather or pests arise.
To make the flowers bloom big and beautiful, just in time for Tet, many gardeners are hiring people to cut off small buds and axillary buds, so that each tree can only focus nutrients on growing the largest bud.
While watering the flower garden with more than 800 pots of various plants, Ms. Tran Thi Lien (62 years old) said: "I planted chrysanthemums in the middle of the 8th lunar month, and so far, the flower garden is in a good growth stage. I have placed bamboo strips around to guide the flower branches to grow straight, and at the same time, I turn on the lights at night to stimulate the plants to grow evenly, reach the desired height and bud as planned. Besides, I handle the right amount of water and medicine to prevent diseases and help the flowers bloom right on Tet holiday."
Not only growing chrysanthemums, Ms. Lien also grows other types of flowers such as marigolds, dahlias, begonias, petunias, and butterfly flowers to meet the needs and tastes of consumers, increasing consumption.
Mr. Ly Phuoc Dang - Head of the Duong Son Flower Cooperative Group (THT) said: During the recent heavy rains, most gardeners have not yet picked buds from the trees and have proactively prevented pests and diseases, so the damage rate is insignificant. Currently, many traders have visited the garden and asked about prices but have not yet placed a deposit. It is expected that the situation of buying and selling Tet flowers this year will be the same as previous years, with prices not fluctuating much, while the price of seedlings, materials and fertilizers have all increased sharply. Therefore, farmers in Duong Son hope that market prices will be stable so that flower growers can have income from the Tet flower crop.
In preparation for the Lunar New Year 2025, Mr. Dang planted about 3,000 pots of flowers of all kinds. Despite the erratic weather, with his many years of experience in growing flowers, he still overcame most of the difficulties.
In particular, this year he received support from the Da Nang City Agricultural and Forestry Extension Center to plant more than 2,000 raspberry chrysanthemum plants (traditional yellow raspberries and Korean raspberries) for Tet production.
"Compared to traditional chrysanthemum cultivation, raspberry chrysanthemum cultivation is not much different. As for the Korean raspberry chrysanthemum variety originating from temperate regions, when growing it, one must take care of it and keep it lit at night for the flowers to develop as desired...", Mr. Dang shared.
Meticulously taking care of a 4,000m2 Mokara orchid garden with more than 100,000 plants, Mr. Le Thanh Trung (41 years old) confided: "During the peak season at the end of the year and Tet, the market's demand for fresh flowers increases, especially in resorts, hotels, flower shops.... Although the weather near Tet is erratic, my orchid garden is not much affected, still growing well thanks to the application of science and technology in production.
I always pay attention to disease prevention to help plants avoid leaf and root fungus, spraying to prevent fungus twice a month, and once every 3-5 days during the rainy season. On average, I sell 20,000-30,000 Mokara orchid branches each month, at a price of 8,000-10,000 VND/branch."
Adapting to market trends and increasingly high customer tastes, flower farmers in Da Nang city in general have proactively grown a variety of flowers and ornamental plants, actively learning techniques to take care of flower gardens effectively, with the hope that the weather will be favorable, flowers will sell well, have good prices, and farmers will have a prosperous Tet.
Mr. Le Duc Hung - Chairman of Hoa Chau Commune People's Committee said : Duong Son flower village has a total area of over 4.5 hectares (3 hectares of chrysanthemums and 1.5 hectares of technological flowers) with 21 households participating . The types of flowers grown in Duong Son flower village are very diverse, in which the most concentrated are chrysanthemums, marigolds, dahlias, mokara orchids, primroses, periwinkles, roses, bougainvilleas, lilies, water lilies, firecrackers ...
" This is a large and long-standing flower growing area of Da Nang city , specializing in supplying chrysanthemums to the Da Nang market and neighboring provinces and cities such as Quang Nam and Quang Tri. Thanks to growing flowers, many households have stable incomes, typically the households of Mr. Ly Phuoc Dang and Le Thanh Trung....", Mr. Hung shared.
