TPO - The French national team has yet to demonstrate its potential. In the last two matches, no player has scored a goal (the only goal was an own goal by an Austrian player). Scoring goals is France's biggest weakness. After the draw with the Netherlands, coach Didier Deschamps himself admitted this.
“Unfortunately we didn’t score,” he said. “It was a tight game and I’m happy with the performance from the players. But tonight I was disappointed with our ineffectiveness in front of goal.
We are doing well with set-pieces. There are a lot of positives to take from them and we have to admit that Austria and the Netherlands are both strong opponents. But it is clear that to win games you need to score. We will see what we can do to improve for the next game to achieve our goal of scoring and qualifying for the next round.”
Midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni was as disappointed as his coach. He stressed: “We lacked the lethality in the final stages. The whole team must do better to win. We created a lot of chances and we could have won. France set the target to top the group.”
Coach Deschamps must quickly rectify the attack |
Against the Netherlands, France controlled the match, especially in the second half when they had 10 shots compared to their opponents' 3. But in reality, France only had 1 shot on target. The rest were consecutive attacks and consecutive ineffective combinations.
This raises many questions about the French expensive attack. They own a series of stars such as Marcus Thuram, Ousmane Dembele, Antoine Griezmann, Kingsley Coman, Olivier Giroud and even without the world's most expensive star Kylian Mbappe, the remaining French characters are still enough to create a notorious attack.
Unfortunately, that attack has yet to score a goal. And ironically, France and Belgium, two of the four teams with the most goals in the qualifying round along with England and Portugal, are the two rare teams that have yet to have a player on the scoresheet at EURO 2024.
