Every year in early March, to pollinate grapefruit trees well and increase the fruit set rate, people in the Dien grapefruit growing area in Bac Tu Liem district, Hanoi start the process of additional pollination for the flowers. |
When grapefruit flowers give off a fragrant scent, it is also the time when grapefruit growers begin the most important task of pollinating the flower clusters so that the trees can bear fruit early, helping to bring high productivity. |
Mr. Dung, owner of Dien grapefruit garden in Bac Tu Liem district, shared: "Previously, if grapefruit trees were allowed to grow naturally, through wind and insects, the fruit set rate was only about 30% to 60%. Since researching fruit tree growing experiences on the internet, we have proactively pollinated by hand, resulting in a much higher fruit set rate (from 80% to 95%)." |
The pollination tool for grapefruit flowers is made quite simply, usually a long bamboo stick with a feather duster attached to the end to make pollen easier to stick. Workers will apply pollen to the feather duster, when the feather duster is dense with pollen, they start applying it directly to the flower buds on the tree. |
"When the weather is sunny, pollination for grapefruit trees is easier, if it rains, pollination will be lost, wet petals will make the pollen not stick. Each garden will have a few trees planted separately to collect pollen to dot on the remaining trees", said Ms. Ngoc, a long-time seasonal worker. |
The method of hand pollinating grapefruit flowers is based on the principle of cross-pollination, which means the stamen of one flower will combine with the pistil of another flower, not necessarily on the same flower," said Ms. Ngoc. |
Grapefruit flowers are hermaphrodite, so any flower can produce fruit. Usually, 4-petal flowers produce smaller fruit than 5-petal flowers, said a long-time gardener here. |
During the pollination season, on sunny, non-rainy days, garden owners will hire workers to pollinate the grapefruit flowers. Grapefruit flowers bloom for a month, so sometimes workers have to work all day and keep the lights on at night to keep up with the growth of the plants. Each worker will receive a salary of 350,000 to 500,000 VND for an eight-hour shift. If the weather is favorable, about 1-2 workers can pollinate a grapefruit garden of nearly 1,000 trees in about half a month. |
