Nam Dinh According to coach Van Sy Son, the referee's decision to continue the match despite the end of extra time caused Quang Nam to make a mistake and lose 1-2 on Nam Dinh's field on the opening day of the 2023-2024 V-League.
At Thien Truong Stadium on the evening of October 22, the referee announced that the match would have four minutes of added time. After that time, the score was 1-1 and referee Nguyen Trung Kien did not blow the whistle.
In the fifth minute of injury time, from a Nam Dinh attack, defender Nguyen Tang Tien let the ball touch his hand in the penalty area. After five minutes of waiting and consulting VAR, Mr. Kien awarded Nam Dinh a penalty. From there, Rafaelson scored the winning goal, 2-1 for the team from Thanh Nam.
"I support the VAR situation. This technology proves that everything that happened was real, not unreasonable. But if the referee blew the whistle correctly, we would not have lost like that. The referee needs to be fair," said coach Van Sy Son. "The match had four minutes of extra time. At four minutes and 30 seconds, there was a foul in the middle of the field, the referee should have blown the whistle to end the time. If the whistle was correct, there would not have been another attack from Nam Dinh, my players would not have made a mistake and we would not have lost so badly."

Quang Nam is a rookie team, and had to play away against Nam Dinh - a team that just spent a lot of money to own a formidable squad with a series of high-quality players such as Nguyen Van Toan, Rafaelson, Hendrio, To Van Vu and Tran Van Kien. They were overwhelmed right after the opening whistle and conceded a goal in the 15th minute from Hendrio's shot.
However, Quang Nam remained resilient. Taking advantage of goalkeeper Tran Nguyen Manh's failed catch, second-half substitute Hoang Vu Samson scored the equalizer in the 48th minute. They then concentrated their troops on defense, forcing Nam Dinh to attack in vain before being awarded the controversial penalty.
According to coach Van Sy Son, Quang Nam is a rookie team with a young squad but the players still played with determination against a higher-class opponent. Therefore, he did not blame his students. Besides, he felt happy to play at Thien Truong, which is considered one of the most vibrant "hot spots" of V-League.
The former Nghe An player also revealed that it has been raining a lot in Quang Nam recently so the players have not been able to practice much, making their playing style incomplete.

Quang Nam won the V-League 2017, before being relegated to the First Division from 2020. Last season, under the leadership of Mr. Son, the team won the right to return to the highest level of competition.
In round 2 on October 28, Quang Nam will visit Khanh Hoa. The opponent is facing economic difficulties and has just lost 0-2 to Ho Chi Minh City, coach Van Sy Son still considers his team as the "underdog". He said: "Our team is young, playing in the V-League is a dream for the players. We always determine that we are 14th, at the bottom of the V-League this year, so any opponent is stronger so we have to try."
