Urban railway line No. 5 (Van Cao - Ngoc Khanh - Lang - Hoa Lac) is an important national project decided in principle by the National Assembly and decided on investment by the Prime Minister.
Metro Line No. 5 is designed according to the 1,435 mm double-track standard, more than 38km long, of which 6.5km is underground, 2km is elevated and nearly 30km is on the ground. The project has a total investment of 65,404 billion VND, using Hanoi city budget capital.
The Van Cao - Hoa Lac Metro line passes through Ba Dinh, Dong Da, Cau Giay, Nam Tu Liem districts and Hoai Duc, Quoc Oai, Thach That districts. Part of the line runs along the central area with high population density, the remaining section passes through developing urban areas, especially the Hoa Lac satellite city.
The route passes through 21 stations including: 6 underground stations (Quan Ngua, Kim Ma, Ring Road 1, Ring Road 2, Hoang Dao Thuy, Ring Road 3); one elevated station Tay Mo and 14 ground stations (Le Duc Tho, Me Tri, An Khanh 1, An Khanh 2, Song Phuong, Sai Son, Quoc Oai, Ngoc My, Dong But, Dong Truc, Dong Bai, Tien Xuan, Trai Moi, Thach Binh).
The project has two depots for ship assembly, maintenance, repair and other technical operations. Depot No. 1 is located in Son Dong commune, Hoai Duc district, covering an area of about 18 hectares. Depot No. 2 is located in Yen Binh commune, Thach That district, covering an area of about 6.9 hectares.
The expected number of vehicles required for each period is 26 trains in 2025, increasing to 37 trains in 2035 and 38 trains in 2050.
The formation of Line No. 5 will connect and transfer passengers with urban railway lines No. 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, allowing passengers to move quickly and conveniently from suburban areas to the city center.
Speaking at the conference of the Government and localities on February 21, Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Tran Sy Thanh said that in order to achieve the growth target of 8% or more in 2025, the city will focus on implementing major projects to create momentum for regional development such as: Starting construction of three bridges across the Red River (Tu Lien, Thuong Cat, Tran Hung Dao) and urban railway project No. 5 (Van Cao - Hoa Lac).
According to the Hanoi Capital Construction Master Plan and the Capital Transport Master Plan to 2030 with a vision to 2050, the urban railway system has 10 lines with a total length of over 410km. The city is adjusting the Master Plan, adding 5 railway lines with a length of 200km. Thus, by 2045 with a vision to 2065, Hanoi will have 15 urban railway lines with a total length of 617km.
Currently, Hanoi operates two urban railway lines: Line 2A (Cat Linh - Ha Dong section) and Line 3 Nhon - Hanoi Station (Nhon elevated section - to S8 station, Cau Giay).
