Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Mai, University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Ho Chi Minh City National University shared with delegates the research "Tra Vinh land during the Nguyen Dynasty (first half of the 19th century)". Accordingly, during the Nguyen Dynasty, in the first half of the 19th century, Tra Vinh was an important part of the country's territory, guarding two of the nine important river mouths in the Mekong Delta, opening to the East Sea. Therefore, this land was always valued by the early kings of the Nguyen Dynasty.
In the first 30 years of the 19th century, Tra Vinh land was sometimes under Vinh Thanh town, sometimes directly under Gia Dinh citadel, and finally under Vinh Long province. The main reason for this change was the geostrategic position of Tra Vinh land in the economic development and southwestern border protection policy of the Nguyen Dynasty. The political, economic, and national security policies of the Nguyen Dynasty towards Tra Vinh land were always flexible, aiming to create conditions for community consolidation, ensuring political security and national security. However, at that time, this was a sparsely populated land, with many undeveloped wilderness areas; heavily feudal in nature. Basically, Tra Vinh at that time was just a small prefecture with economic difficulties. The Nguyen Dynasty only recognized the important position of Tra Vinh land but did not have specific, appropriate policies to awaken the potential and strengths of this land.
