Ministry of Education and Training proposes high school graduation exam plan for students according to 2018 General Education Program
At the meeting of the National Council for Education and Human Resources Development on November 14, the Ministry of Education and Training presented a draft report on the high school graduation exam plan from 2025. Accordingly, it recommended and proposed to the Government that the high school graduation exam be conducted in 4 subjects, including 2 compulsory subjects and 2 elective subjects.
Reduce exam pressure
With this option, Thanh Nien Newspaper reporters conducted a "pocket" survey with 10 high school teachers in Ho Chi Minh City. These teachers shared the same opinion and supported the option of students taking the high school graduation exam with the least number of subjects among the options proposed by the Ministry of Education and Training. That is, the above teachers all chose the option of taking the high school graduation exam with 4 subjects, including 2 compulsory subjects and 2 elective subjects.
Teacher Lam Vu Cong Chinh, Nguyen Du High School (District 10, Ho Chi Minh City), said that the plan proposed by the Ministry to the Government is consistent with the orientation of the 2018 General Education Program and the wishes of students. Exams in 4 subjects will help reduce the workload and pressure on students as well as society.
Mr. Huynh Thanh Phu, Principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1), expressed his support for the Ministry's proposal. Exams with fewer subjects will reduce pressure on students and reduce economic burden compared to organizing exams with many subjects and extending the time.
At the same time, this principal also agreed that the two compulsory subjects are math, literature and two elective subjects among the following subjects: Foreign language, history, physics, chemistry, biology, geography, economic education and law, information technology, technology. Because choosing two elective subjects will help students demonstrate their strengths and abilities in the best way in the exam. That is also a way for them to reduce pressure during exams.
What do students say about the high school graduation exam with 4 subjects?
A group of 11th grade students from Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City) expressed their opinion that taking 4 subjects is in line with the wishes of the majority of students. Because if they have to study and take subjects that are not in the university entrance exam group, career orientation will make students more stressed.
Teacher Le Minh Huy, Nguyen Hien High School (District 11), also said that choosing the 4-subject option as proposed by the Ministry has the advantage of reducing exam pressure for students.
Besides, this teacher thinks that there are also disadvantages that can lead to lopsided learning. For example, students will invest in studying the subjects they have chosen for the exam and neglect other subjects.
Does foreign language being an optional subject affect the study of this subject?
Faced with concerns that foreign languages becoming an elective subject will impact the orientation of global citizenship education, the process of capacity development in modern digital transformation, etc., Mr. Phu said that it is time for us to think that foreign languages are skills and obvious luggage that students must prepare, and not think that only by taking exams can we learn.
However, Mr. Phu also suggested that the Ministry could consider giving extra points to candidates who do not choose a foreign language but have high results in international certificates that are valuable and prestigious globally. This could encourage students to equip themselves with better foreign language skills.
According to the Ministry of Education and Training, with the high school graduation exam plan having 2 compulsory subjects and 2 elective subjects, candidates will have 36 ways to choose. Therefore, teacher Lam Vu Cong Chinh suggested that the Ministry soon announce specifically the 36 ways to choose and how such combinations of choices will meet the purpose of university admission and career orientation.
