Israel carries out first airstrikes on Lebanese capital since ceasefire

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên28/03/2025

The Guardian reported on March 28 that the Israeli army conducted airstrikes on the Lebanese capital Beirut on the same day, the first time the city has been attacked since Israel and Lebanon signed a ceasefire agreement in November 2024.

This is the latest and most notable escalation by Israel with its northern neighbor. In recent days, Tel Aviv has launched attacks on southern Lebanon, while holding the Beirut government responsible for rockets fired from Lebanon into Israeli territory.

Before the attack, the Israeli military issued an evacuation notice and warned that it would attack a building in the Beirut suburb of Dahiyeh that Tel Aviv said was a Hezbollah base. An Israeli military spokesman later said the airstrike targeted a Hezbollah truck and a warehouse where drones were stored.

After Israel bombed Beirut on March 28, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam criticized Israel, calling the incident a dangerous escalation, according to AFP. French President Emmanuel Macron called the attack absurd and said he would call US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the details. Macron said Tel Aviv had unilaterally violated the ceasefire.

Hezbollah's actions following the Israeli attack on Beirut are currently unknown. Hezbollah has denied involvement in the rocket attacks on Israel in recent days, saying that this is an excuse for Tel Aviv to continue its military operations in Lebanon.

Meanwhile, the Lebanese army said on March 28 that it had discovered a rocket launch site in the Qaaqaaieh al-Jisr area of southern Lebanon. The launchers there fired projectiles at Israeli territory. The Lebanese army said it would investigate to determine the perpetrators of the rocket attacks.
