By early March 2025, the price of live pigs had increased to 75,000 - 83,000 VND/kg, an increase of 15 - 18% compared to early January 2025 and the highest level in the past 3 years.
Pig prices continue to rise, surpassing 80,000 VND/kg
According to Dan Viet reporters, the price of live pigs in the North today is traded at 76,000-78,000 VND/kg, an average increase of more than 3% compared to the end of January 2025 and an increase of nearly 24% compared to February 2024. The price of live pigs in the Central region fluctuates between 75,000-82,000 VND/kg.
In the southern provinces, the price of live pigs continued to increase sharply today, soaring to 80,000-83,000 VND/kg.
Regarding the reason for the sharp increase in pork prices recently, some farmers said that it was due to the strong outbreak of disease in late 2024, causing many unqualified farms to temporarily close, reducing the herd, while large-scale livestock businesses said that the pigs were not yet of sufficient weight to be ready for sale.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Hoang Van Dien, a farm owner in Ninh Binh, said that the price of live pigs has been increasing continuously due to three main reasons. First, because the Law on Animal Husbandry has come into effect, 80% of farms in the southern provinces have had to move out of residential areas, causing the supply in these areas to decrease significantly.
Secondly, due to the authorities' strict handling and tightening of pig imports in the southern provinces, smuggled goods are almost unable to cross the border. Thirdly, due to the complicated developments of epidemics, especially African swine fever, causing heavy losses to pig farmers in the provinces and cities.
It is worth mentioning that pork prices increased sharply in the context that the peak consumption period has passed, poultry prices are stable at a very low level and especially the total pig herd is still on an upward trend (according to the General Statistics Office, by the end of February 2025, the total pig herd increased by 3.2% compared to the same period in 2024).

The livestock and poultry market report of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment in February 2025 stated: This is a somewhat unusual development in the pork market.
Some opinions say that whether or not there is speculation and manipulation of pork prices in the context of the pig farming market share in large enterprises is increasingly dominant and large? Because according to statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, currently, the output of pigs produced in small-scale households has decreased to only about 30-35%, the output of pigs produced in farms/enterprises accounts for 65-70%.
Buffalo and cattle farming in February 2025 did not fluctuate much, the buffalo herd continued to decrease due to the narrowing of grazing land area and low economic efficiency.
A notable figure is that according to statistics from the General Department of Customs, in January 2025, Vietnam's meat imports of all kinds reached more than 80,800 tons, worth 174.7 million USD, down 17.1% in volume and 15.3% in value compared to the previous month. However, compared to the same period in 2024, Vietnam's meat imports increased by 7.7% in volume and 13.3% in value.
Meat exports continued to be sluggish with an output of more than 1,100 tons of all kinds, worth more than 8.5 million USD, down 65.3% in volume and 56.1% in value compared to January 2025; down 35.2% in volume and 8.9% in value compared to the same period in 2024.
Large livestock enterprises make big profits
Information found by Dan Viet reporters shows that thanks to the high price of live pigs, both small farmers and businesses are making huge profits.
According to the 2024 financial report, Mr. Nguyen Nhu So's Dabaco Group recorded a profit after tax of 769 billion VND, an increase of nearly 3,000% over the same period, or about 30 times higher (in 2023, Dabaco's profit after tax was only 23 billion VND).
This year, this "big guy" in pig farming in the North plans to have a pre-tax profit of VND1,108 billion, an increase of 29.3% compared to the estimated profit in 2024 and an expected after-tax profit of VND1,007 billion, an increase of 30% over the same period.

Similarly, BaF Vietnam Agriculture Joint Stock Company (BAF) also revealed that the average production cost of 1kg of live pig of the enterprise is estimated at VND45,000/kg, while the price of live pig is maintained at around VND70,000/kg, the highest is up to VND83,000/kg. From there, BAF sets a profit target of VND450 billion in 2025, an increase of 40% compared to 2024.
With the picture of high-profit pig farming and open potential, BaF Vietnam recently announced the establishment of 3 subsidiaries in Tay Ninh province, with a total charter capital of 760 billion VND. The projects of this enterprise include: BAF Tay Ninh 1 High-Tech Livestock Company Limited, with a charter capital of 340 billion VND and 100% capital contribution by BaF Agriculture, the main activities are pig farming and pig breeding production.
BAF Tay Ninh 2 High-Tech Livestock Company Limited, with a charter capital of VND 340 billion, operates mainly in the field of pig farming and pig breeding production. Finally, BAF Tay Ninh 1 Animal Feed Production Company Limited, with a charter capital of VND 80 billion, 100% contributed by BAF, operates mainly in the field of animal feed production, poultry and aquatic products. The expected implementation time of the projects is in February 2025.
The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) previously calculated that for a farm with a scale of 200 pigs or more, the production cost of live pigs is nearly 51,500 VND/kg. If the price is calculated from 75,000-83,000 VND/kg, farmers selling pigs with a standard weight of 100kg will make a profit of 2.35-3.15 million VND/pig.
The livestock and poultry market report of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment also forecasts that, in the context of higher pork prices, along with lower prices of raw materials for animal feed and finished feed, pig farmers will make a profit, creating motivation to restore and increase herds. These are factors that have positively impacted the growth rate of the pig herd in the past year.
It is forecasted that the price of live pigs may continue to increase due to the impact of the epidemic on pig supply, but it will not increase dramatically.
According to the General Statistics Office, by the end of February 2025, the total pig herd in the country is estimated to reach 26,802.2 thousand heads, an increase of 3.2%; the total poultry herd is estimated to reach 574.5 million heads, an increase of 3.4%; the total buffalo herd is estimated to reach 2,085.6 thousand heads, a decrease of 4.4%; the total cow herd in the country is estimated to reach 6,317.2 thousand heads, a decrease of 0.5% over the same period in 2024.
