In key coconut growing districts such as Giong Trom, Chau Thanh, Mo Cay Nam... many gardeners are excited because for the first time, dry coconuts are sold at the same price as they are now.

Mr. Nguyen Van Binh (62 years old, living in Giong Trom) shared: "This crop, I harvested 600 fruits and sold them for 187,000 VND/dozen, the highest price ever." Not only Mr. Binh, many other households also benefited when traders hunted to buy dry coconuts at prices up to 190,000 VND/dozen.

Mr. Binh said that at this time, coconuts are "hanging fruit" (off-season), causing output to decrease by more than 50% compared to the main season, so coconut prices often increase. However, coconut prices have never been as high as they are now.

Meanwhile, Mr. Huynh Quang Duc - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ben Tre - informed that another reason for the record high coconut price in Ben Tre is the influence from raw coconut growing areas of other countries.

"Currently, the price of dried coconut in countries like India and the Philippines has increased sharply, in some countries it is three times higher than normal, causing the price of coconut in other countries to increase as well, including Vietnamese coconut," said Mr. Duc.

In Ben Tre, coconut processing companies currently have many export orders, especially from the European and American markets, so they are in great need of raw coconuts. In addition, the prices of by-products such as coconut water, coconut shells, coconut fiber, etc. have also increased, contributing to the high price of raw materials.

Mr. Nguyen Van Ban - Chairman of Ben Tre Farmers' Association - said that the locality is promoting technical support and encouraging coconut farmers to join cooperatives and groups to connect with businesses.

"With 79,000 hectares of coconut, we aim to build a closed value chain, improve product quality, and meet export standards," said Mr. Ban.
