On the afternoon of January 12, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue received Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh was delighted to meet the Indonesian President again; affirming that the visit has special significance, helping to create new momentum for the relationship between the two countries after more than 10 years of establishing the Strategic Partnership and towards the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations (1955-2025).
The Indonesian President highly appreciated Vietnam's remarkable development in recent years, becoming one of the high-growth economies. Vietnam is a strategically important partner of Indonesia in the region.
The two leaders highly appreciated the strong and dynamic development of cooperation between Vietnam and Indonesia in all fields.
The two sides agreed to consider soon bringing the Strategic Partnership to a new height. Strive to soon increase bilateral trade turnover to 15 billion USD and higher at 18 billion USD before 2028; facilitate and encourage businesses of the two countries to invest in each other's markets.
Expand cooperation to new and important areas such as artificial intelligence, digital economy, green economy, renewable energy, investment in developing electric vehicle ecosystems and electric vehicle batteries; expand cooperation within the framework of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JTEP); strengthen cooperation in the Halal field; strengthen cooperation in food security, research and promote the signing of a rice trade agreement.
The two sides also affirmed to strengthen cooperation in other important areas such as defense, security, maritime cooperation; coordinate to resolve common security challenges at sea; cooperate in fisheries and aquaculture; coordinate to limit illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities...
The two leaders discussed the regional situation and concerns, and agreed to continue to coordinate and support each other at multilateral organizations; strengthen cooperation, consolidate solidarity, central role and common views of ASEAN on regional security issues, including the East Sea issue.
The Prime Minister asked Indonesia to send a high-level representative and support Vietnam in successfully organizing the ASEAN Future Forum on rapid, sustainable, people-centered development in 2024 to contribute to building a resilient and sustainable ASEAN Community.
At the meeting with President Joko Widodo, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue welcomed the President - a dear friend of Vietnam - to return to visit Vietnam for the second time.
The National Assembly Chairman shared that he personally still holds good memories of his official visit to Indonesia in August 2023, about the warm, hospitable, and sincere welcome of the President and people of Indonesia.
On behalf of the Vietnamese National Assembly, the National Assembly Chairman affirmed that Vietnam always attaches importance to and strives to cooperate with Indonesia to promote the Vietnam - Indonesia Strategic Partnership to become more substantial and profound.
President Joko Widodo stated that the strategic partnership between the two countries has achieved many positive results. During the visit, the two sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Information and Communications Technology Cooperation and a Memorandum of Understanding on Fisheries Cooperation. These are areas where the two sides can effectively promote bilateral cooperation towards common prosperity. In particular, the support and assistance of the National Assembly plays an important role in promoting the partnership between the two countries, the Indonesian President emphasized.
At the meeting, the two leaders emphasized the role of the National Assembly in promoting bilateral relations, creating a legal basis for development cooperation activities between the two countries.
The two sides agreed to discuss ways to elevate relations to a new level; increase delegation exchanges at all levels and channels, including delegations of the two countries' National Assembly leaders; and encourage the expansion of cooperation between localities and friendship associations of the two countries.
The National Assembly Chairman stated that Vietnam will create favorable conditions for rice exports to Indonesia; at the same time, he suggested that the two sides should promote cooperation on Halal food: soon sign an agreement between Vietnam and the Indonesian Halal Certification Organization...
The two sides agreed to promote and diversify investment and business cooperation; strengthen cooperation in equitable energy transition and safe digital transformation...
The National Assembly Chairman added that the digital economy currently accounts for about 17% of Vietnam's GDP, striving to reach 30% by 2030. Vietnam wishes to cooperate with Indonesia in this field.
The two leaders agreed to promote cooperation in the field of renewable energy, including the project of producing electric vehicles and batteries in Indonesia. The Indonesian President expressed his hope that the Vietnamese National Assembly and the National Assembly Chairman would promote policies to create a legal basis for accelerating the process of energy transition, self-sufficiency in renewable energy, investment cooperation, and joint ventures in producing electric vehicle batteries between enterprises of the two countries.
The National Assembly Chairman said that since the beginning of its term, the Vietnamese National Assembly has focused on building institutions to promote this sector. The Vietnamese National Assembly will continue to create favorable conditions for foreign enterprises, including Indonesian enterprises and investors.
Regarding the relationship between the two countries' legislative bodies, the two leaders highly appreciated the role of Parliamentary/Congress cooperation in promoting the development of relations between the two countries.
