Thien Nhan - the one-time "child singer" - marked her return to the music market after a long absence with the MV (music video) "Thi Kinh". This work by musician Nguyen Hoang Phong will open a series of her upcoming projects.
Convince both connoisseurs and the general public
Musician Nguyen Hoang Phong is also the "father" of the famous hit "Thi Mau" in 2023.
Before Thien Nhan's hands, the song "Thi Kinh" had been left unfinished for 7 years because the author had not found a suitable singer. In the MV, Thien Nhan plays 2 different roles: both a "clairvoyant girl" with wisdom eyes and Thi Kinh - a character in the folk tale "Quan Am Thi Kinh", representing the image of a kind woman who, despite being wrongly accused, does not complain.
Through the folk tale "Quan Am Thi Kinh", director Cao Thuong and screenwriter Chang Chang built a script that closely follows the original story - which has appeared in art forms such as: reformed opera, cheo, television drama...
After the MV "Thi Kinh", Thien Nhan has planned to release a series of new music products in the near future. Most recently, the MV "#DTDB" is in post-production. This product also has a folk color similar to "Thi Kinh."
Meanwhile, Hoa Minzy's "Ken ca chong canh" has just been released and has created a fever on the music charts of many platforms. After the resounding breakthrough with "Thi Mau", Hoa Minzy continues to exploit folk materials in her music products. "Ken ca chong canh" impresses with its skillful blend of Northern folk songs and modern electronic music.
In recent years, lyrical music with folk melodies, combined with modern arrangements, has been loved by both music lovers and the general public. In 2023, many albums using folk materials won prestigious awards at year-end awards ceremonies, such as "Vu tru co bay" by singer Phuong My Chi or "Link" by singer Hoang Thuy Linh.
Therefore, in his recent comeback, singer Duc Phuc did not hesitate to try his hand at this music genre that is stirring up the Vietnamese music market. With the humming lines "y a... y a..." that remind listeners of Northern folk songs and the catchy melody, the MV "Di chua cau duyen" has become a "big hit" for this male singer this year.
Released 2 months ago, "Follow me home" by singer Ngoc Mai has not yet "cooled down". In addition to the clear timbre, combined with the sounds of the panpipe, flute... that captivate the audience's ears, Ngoc Mai also applies the processing of folk songs but concisely, expressing a modern spirit, mixed with a bit of mischief and youthfulness.
Applying folk colors to contemporary music products also includes "Canh sen lone", "Loi ru anh sang" by Ngoc Mai; "Co Ba ca co" by People's Artist Bach Tuyet in collaboration with Ho Phi Nal, depicting the beauty of the land and people of the South. In addition, "Cau duyen" (Hong Duyen); "Ca vi thuong thuong" (Avi Kim Anh); the album "Choi tro yeu" with "5 10", "Um ba la xi bua", "Keo co", "Bit mat bat deu", "Oan tuc gia"... (M Tu); "Dieu da va Tet ngot sot" (Phuong My Chi)... are also interesting products.

Don't blend into the mainstream
Bringing folk materials into musical products is not a new thing. The common point of these products is that artists pay great attention to exploiting and using folk cultural materials, national traditions as well as the unique features of each region, thereby combining them with modern elements in a very creative way.
Most of these music products have created a certain buzz along with the significant success of the experimenters. Among them, we can mention the cases of Tung Duong, Ngoc Khue, Ngo Hong Quang, Hoang Thuy Linh, Double 2T... or recently Phuong My Chi. Their success has contributed to inspiring those who come after.
Of course, each stage has a different perspective, approach and exploitation. Musical works in each stage must also meet audience segments and listener needs with their own characteristics.
The source of inspiration from folk and traditional materials in music is always endless. Exploiting folk and traditional materials has always been one of the top priorities of generations of artists. Exploiting these materials is also a trend in many songs for young people today.
Insiders believe that not only music but also literature, painting... always exploit folk and traditional materials. In music products, that material can be expressed through lyrics, melodies, costumes...
Young people today tend to favor electronic music. Traditional and folk materials are therefore also processed and "transformed" to suit. However, traditional and folk materials do not "guarantee" the success of a musical product. Any combination or innovation must be carefully and meticulously calculated.
Singer M Tu said that before releasing the album "Playing Love", she had performed many songs with strong folk and traditional elements. However, in this new album, everything had to be calculated and adjusted to suit the audience.
According to singer Ho Phi Nal, folklore and traditional elements can help music products flourish thanks to their uniqueness. The important thing is that musicians and singers need to grasp the prevailing trends but not blend into the general flow.
Ho Phi Nal believes that using traditional and folk materials should be moderate, to ensure that young people can still easily accept it. One of his secrets is to use the right musical tone when transitioning between two materials, to avoid creating a feeling of disappointment for the listener.
Meanwhile, producer DTAP believes that for a music product to be successful, first of all, it requires a serious working attitude from all involved. When all efforts, intelligence, and creativity are devoted, the product will be well received by the audience.
With the current trend of digitalizing art - including music - folk culture has more opportunities to be popularized and spread. Along with this trend, many young people have also accepted traditional music in a new way, gradually eliminating the old and outdated, properly appreciating the creativity of artists. This is an encouraging direction, contributing to creating diversity and excitement for the country's musical life, while at the same time continuously spreading traditional culture.
Folk music always has lasting value. The fusion of folk and modern elements in musical products has created a unique color for Vietnamese music.
