On March 1, the Department of Education and Training of Kon Tum City (Kon Tum Province) organized a gong and xoang festival and a brocade costume contest for ethnic minority students in the area.
The festival had the participation of 16 teams with a total of 1,080 students from primary and secondary schools in Kon Tum City. Of these, 314 students participated in the gong team, 485 students in the xoang dance team and 281 students participated in the ethnic minority costume performance.
More than 1,000 students from primary and secondary schools in Kon Tum City participated in gong, xoang and brocade costumes performances.
This is one of the activities of the Kon Tum City education sector to celebrate the 95th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Kon Tum province.
Participating in the traditional costume performance, Y Viet Kinh (9th grade student of Dak Ro Wa Secondary School, Kon Tum City) said that this was the second time he participated in the gong and xoang festival organized by the Department of Education and Training. Coming to the festival, he was very happy to introduce to his friends the traditional costumes of his people. Through the program, he loved the cultural values passed down by his ancestors even more.
Similarly, A Dung (9th grade student, Tran Hung Dao Secondary School, Kon Tum City) said that this was the first time he and his school's gong team participated in the festival. As the drummer and the highlight of the team, he felt quite bewildered. However, when the majestic, deep and deep sounds from the gong set resounded, he regained his composure and began to perform with passionate traditional dances.
"Coming to the festival and being able to perform the gong and traditional dances of my people, I am very happy. This is also an opportunity for friends near and far to better understand the beauty of the costumes and dances of our Ba Na people," said A Dung.

Mr. Thai Khac Hoa, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Kon Tum City, said that the gong and xoang festival and brocade costume performance are spaces for students to love and appreciate traditional cultural values. Thereby, helping them to be aware of preserving, maintaining and promoting the cultural values of their nation. Hopefully, the gong and xoang festival will help the younger generation to be aware of the role of gongs and xoang in traditional cultural activities, especially folk festivals.
"Currently, many schools in the city have implemented the wearing of ethnic minority brocade costumes when going to school or during flag-raising ceremonies at the beginning of the week, at local festivals... Teaching students to play gongs and dance xoang is one of the regular contents, practiced at school as well as creative experiences, entertainment, cultural activities, extracurricular activities... suitable to the specific conditions of each school and each locality," said Mr. Hoa.
