After 3 months of implementing forest planting at U Minh Thuong National Park - UMT National Park (Kien Giang), J&T Express recorded a survival rate of 98.2% of forest trees.
The company is currently implementing phase 2 of the project to help young trees grow healthily and maximize their carbon absorption capacity.
Accordingly, the program "Building the future - J&T Express joins hands in the project of planting 1 billion trees" is implemented by J&T Express in coordination with the Center for Natural Resources and Environment Communication - TNMT Information Center (under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment - now the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment), in response to the Prime Minister's call for the goal of planting 1 billion trees in the period of 2021 - 2025.
According to information from the Center for Natural Resources and Environment, after 3 months of planting, the young trees have taken root and grown well with a survival rate of 98.2%. This impressive figure is a positive signal showing the good adaptation of the Melaleuca trees - one of the few tree species that can grow in the special peat swamp environment in UMT National Park. Moreover, this is also a forest tree with a higher CO2 absorption capacity than many other tree species, 55% higher than tropical forests, contributing significantly to reducing greenhouse gas emissions (according to the Ramsar Convention Secretariat). It is expected that the forest area from these 15,000 Melaleuca trees of J&T Express will absorb 120 tons of CO2e after 5 years and 240 tons of CO2e after 10 years.
According to experts, the first 3 years after planting are the "golden" period that determines the tree's ability to grow, so the combination of new planting and forest care and protection is the key factor in creating sustainable effectiveness for the program.
That is also the reason why J&T Express has decided to accompany the Center for Natural Resources and Environment and UMT National Park to monitor, care for and protect Melaleuca forests in the next 3 years (2025 - 2027). "This not only helps increase the forest area, but also ensures stable forest development, enhances the ability to protect and absorb greenhouse gases. This process is closely coordinated between the parties, so that we can monitor and regularly update the quantity, health and growth parameters of Melaleuca trees in the field", said a representative of the J&T Express brand.
In addition to focusing on the long-term development of Melaleuca forests, in phase 2, activities to enhance fire prevention and forest protection will be implemented monthly and annually. Tree care measures will also be implemented according to strict standards of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, to ensure the highest survival rate for forest trees.
Not only known as the 5th biosphere reserve recognized by UNESCO, the 8th wetland reserve (Ramsar) of our country, UMT National Park is also one of the two most important areas of peat swamp forest remaining in Vietnam. This place plays an important role in biodiversity conservation, climate regulation and water resource protection for the Mekong Delta. Choosing U Minh forest to implement this environmental project shows J&T Express's desire and efforts in preserving these values, contributing to creating a green and sustainable environment.
Previously, J&T Express has also made its mark through many meaningful projects, typically the collection and recycling of plastic waste into tables and chairs to donate to schools in mountainous areas. Environmental protection is one of the important pillars of the sustainable development strategy that J&T Express has been persistently implementing for many years. The program "Building the future - J&T Express joins hands in the project of planting 1 billion trees" has been and is continuing the journey to realize the goal of "Go green" of this logistics enterprise.
