Painter Quynh Thom was born in 1971 in Tuan Chinh commune, Vinh Tuong district, Vinh Phuc province. His hometown in his memory is immense rice fields, winding village roads, thatched houses with bamboo walls..., all imprinted in his mind since childhood. He began his artistic journey when he studied at the Department of Graphics, Vinh Phu Provincial Culture and Arts College (old name) during the period of 1988-1991. After that, he continued to study at the Central University of Art Education (Hanoi).

Although working mainly in the field of graphic design, artist Quynh Thom has never given up his passion for painting. He always keeps his creative flow even though graphic design has given him a proud career. Returning to painting in the past 5-6 years has opened up a new creative horizon for the artist, where he can freely express his emotions, thoughts and deep contemplations about life after a long journey.

Often associated with familiar scenes of the countryside, his paintings are mainly landscapes in a harmonious combination of nature and emotion, between rustic beauty and the rhythmic movements of life.

Each painting is also a story of love, nostalgia and belief in the value of the countryside and the Vietnamese people. Anyone who has seen Quynh Thom's paintings will surely feel the memories, the deep nostalgia, which are indispensable values in the journey of each person to return to their roots to further appreciate and be proud of the value of national culture.

“Countryside Colors” is an important highlight in the creative journey of artist Quynh Thom. This is the third time the artist has organized an exhibition with this name, and the exhibition always retains its original spirit.

From the first paintings, Quynh Thom has brought viewers a warm, tolerant look at the peaceful beauty, imbued with affection. It is a familiar, close image, throughout his silent, persistent creative journey. The skillful combination of traditional beauty and modern style is the artist's strength. He "captures" beautiful moments in daily life, adding unique shapes, sometimes abstract and creative lines.

It is this innovation that makes the familiar images in his paintings become new. The bright colors, such as yellow, blue or light pink in the paintings also show the deep connection between nature and the inner emotions of the artist. Each painting is like a symphony full of sounds, colors and moods.

The appeal of “Sac Que” is not only limited to the domestic market but also spreads internationally. In 2024, an interesting story happened when the exhibition of artist Quynh Thom was about to open: an Australian tourist was fascinated by one of his paintings and decided to buy it right before the exhibition officially started.

That joyful memory reflects both the strong appeal of contemporary art to international visitors and the inspiring stories of art, especially works that evoke the rustic beauty of Vietnam.

Thanks to the simple details and profound emotions that Quynh Thom has conveyed through her works and paintings, viewers, whether domestic or international, feel close and familiar, as if they were living in a peaceful, poetic space.

At the exhibition “Sac Que 3” held from April 14 to 24 at the Fine Arts Exhibition Hall 16 Ngo Quyen, Hanoi, artist Quynh Thom introduced 55 new works, including about 6 large-size paintings measuring 1.26m x 1.86m. 90% of the works were drawn directly by him, the longest painting only took a few days in sublime emotions, without elaborate trimming.

In this series of works, the public will admire mostly images of countryside ponds, a familiar symbol of childhood. The artist himself admits that he paints to relieve his nostalgia, as a desire to record what is quietly fading away with the flow of time. He paints continuously, sometimes for more than ten hours a day, sometimes all night without putting down his brush.

The artist emotionally expressed: “For me, it is not just a profession or a hobby, but an indispensable spiritual world in life. Every time I hold a brush, my emotions just surge, I cannot contain them. The more I paint, the more I feel like I am living more deeply, as if memories are reviving and time has stopped.”
