TPO - The man who pointed an AK-47 at former President Donald Trump on the afternoon of September 15 had a lengthy arrest record spanning decades and had previously worked in Ukraine.

Ryan Wesley Routh was arrested shortly after the incident at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. US officials said Secret Service agents opened fire on Routh after seeing the barrel of his AK-47 pointed through a chain-link fence near where Trump was playing golf. US officials consider this an assassination attempt on Trump. Routh supported previous Republican presidential candidates Vivek Ramaswamy and Nikki Haley, and urged them to continue their campaigns, the NY Post reported. Routh's X social media account shows that he frequently criticizes politicians, including Trump, current President Joe Biden and celebrities such as Bruno Mars. Routh is also a staunch supporter of Ukraine and Taiwan (China). Routh has written on X social media about trying to "sell" the idea of recruiting Afghanistan veterans to fight for Ukraine, but has been repeatedly rejected. Routh spent several months in Ukraine in 2022. "I am ready to go and die for democracy and the children of Ukraine," Routh wrote on the social network X in February 2022. The March 10, 2023, article on the news site Semafor cited Routh as the head of the International Volunteer Center (IVC) in Ukraine, a private organization that works to "empower volunteers" and other nonprofit groups working to "enhance the delivery of humanitarian aid throughout Ukraine," according to the IVC website. In a June 2022 interview with Newsweek , Routh spoke about his efforts to recruit volunteers for Ukraine's International Corps.  |

A background check showed Routh lives in Hawaii and has had dozens of run-ins with police since the 1990s. Routh is a native of North Carolina, where he has been arrested for drug-related offenses, driving without a license, an expired inspection, and driving without insurance. In addition, the Greensboro News & Record reported in 2002 that Routh was arrested after barricading himself in his company’s office during a three-hour standoff after being stopped by police and brandishing a gun before fleeing. Routh moved to Hawaii in 2017, where he founded a company that builds modest housing for the homeless. When he was spotted pointing a gun at Trump on September 15, Routh fled in an SUV but was soon arrested. Mr Trump's campaign said he was safe and continued to send a message to his supporters that he would "never surrender". "There were gunshots near me but before the rumors get out of hand, I want you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND HEALTHY!" Mr Trump wrote in a message posted on social media. "Nothing will stop me.
