(CLO) The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an agency led by billionaire Elon Musk to cut costs in the US government, announced the termination of 89 contracts of the US Department of Education with a total value of $881 million in an announcement on Monday evening.
Among them, the US Department of Education is canceling $101 million in funding for its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) program as part of DOGE's campaign to eliminate "wasteful" spending. "Your tax dollars were spent on this," Musk wrote of the DOE's spending.
The U.S. Department of Education's DEI program promotes a diverse, equitable, and inclusive educational environment for all students. DEI initiatives focus on ensuring that everyone, regardless of background, race, gender, or ability, has access to quality education and the support to succeed.
But “DEI has never been about ‘equity’ — it’s about enforcing ideological conformity and institutionalizing discrimination. Shutting down these wasteful and divisive programs is a win for every student,” Nicki Neily, founder and president of Parents Defending Education, said in response to the spending cuts.

According to DOGE, the Department of Education also spent an additional $1.5 million on a contractor just to “observe mail and clerical operations” at a postal center, but that contract was also terminated during recent spending cuts.
DOGE has led efforts to cut spending at the U.S. Department of Education, which announced the end of several budgets in early February. In his first set of executive orders, U.S. President Donald Trump launched a review of DEI practices and teaching methods at educational institutions that receive federal funding.
Amid the aforementioned budget squeeze, some universities, such as Missouri State University and West Virginia University, have begun closing their DEI offices.
