In previous years, Saigon Zoo and Botanical Garden has gone through many periods of change, especially the period heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, in 2020, the zoo's revenue dropped dramatically, to just over 70 billion VND. In 2021, the situation became even more difficult as revenue continued to plummet to over 45 billion VND.
Since 2022, when the epidemic situation has gradually been controlled, the Zoo has had a positive recovery. The company's revenue this year reached its highest level ever with more than 144 billion VND. Entering 2023, although revenue no longer peaked as in 2022, the company's after-tax profit reached its highest level in history, reaching more than 8.4 billion VND.
At the end of 2024, the news that Saigon Zoo and Botanical Garden was at risk of having to stop operating due to being charged nearly 800 billion VND in land rent caused a stir in public opinion. Many people expressed concern about the fate of one of the oldest zoos in the world as well as the historical and cultural values that this place has preserved for decades.
Faced with this situation, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Ho Chi Minh City has stepped in and said that it will let the company review and declare in detail the land area used for business purposes and the area not used for business purposes. This is considered an important step to ensure transparency in determining the land rent that the Zoo must pay.
Based on the results of this review, the tax authority will review and possibly adjust the land rental fee for the company. This opens up hope that the Zoo can continue to maintain its operations, serve the needs of the people and tourists, and continue to carry out the tasks of preserving rare flora and fauna in the future.
Saigon Zoo and Botanical Garden is not only a familiar tourist destination for Ho Chi Minh City residents but also one of the oldest zoos in the world. Built in 1864, this zoo is now 160 years old. For more than a century, this place has not only been a destination for entertainment but also played an important role in the conservation of rare flora and fauna.
With an area of over 20 hectares located right in the center of Ho Chi Minh City, the Zoo is currently taking care of more than 1,300 animals of 125 species, including many rare species listed in the Red Book. In addition, this place also owns more than 2,500 trees of 900 different plant species, contributing to maintaining green space in the heart of a crowded urban area.
