(CLO) China's leading scientist, Professor Rao Yi - President of Beijing Capital Medical University, declared that DeepSeek's technological breakthrough could be China's most important contribution to the world in nearly two centuries.

"DeepSeek is the biggest shock to human society from China in the field of science and technology in the past 185 years," Professor Rao wrote on social media on February 5.

He emphasized that China has achieved many important technological achievements, but the actual impact that DeepSeek brings is much stronger and more surprising.

Professor Rao also mentioned China's defeat by the British in the First Opium War in 1842, an event that ended China's notion of world leadership and showed its backwardness in military technology.

DeepSeek recently made a splash globally with the release of two large language models (LLMs), V3 and R1. What's special is that they were developed at a significantly lower cost and computational resources than leading US products like ChatGPT, yet still achieved almost equivalent performance.

Even OpenAI CEO Sam Altman admitted: "This is an impressive model, especially for the level of cost-effectiveness they've been able to achieve."

The rise of DeepSeek marks a turning point in the AI competition between China and the US. Previously, Chinese tech companies were considered to be lagging behind OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic. However, with DeepSeek achieving a major breakthrough without the massive resources of its Western rivals, China is proving that it can create world-class AI technology with its own approach.

In addition, DeepSeek’s success has also had a strong impact on the US stock market. The stocks of major technology corporations, especially Nvidia, Microsoft and Alphabet (Google), all fluctuated sharply immediately after DeepSeek’s announcement, due to concerns about a potential new competitor from China.

Professor Rao’s assessment of DeepSeek not only underscores the significance of this breakthrough, but also recalls a tumultuous period in China’s history. After the Opium Wars, China suffered decades of technological and economic backwardness. DeepSeek’s emergence as a symbol of China’s technological renaissance may have broader political and cultural significance.

With its early success, DeepSeek is opening a new door for global technological innovation. However, the big question is whether China can maintain this momentum and turn DeepSeek into a global AI platform, or whether it will face international political and commercial challenges. Either way, the emergence of DeepSeek will certainly be a new chapter in the 21st century technology race.
