Assessing the work of streaming junior high school students, leaders of many vocational schools said that there has been improvement but there are still many difficulties as parents still prefer to send their children to study culture and go to university.

According to Mr. Nguyen Chi Thanh, Head of the Department of Vocational Education (VET) of the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Ho Chi Minh City, to increase the effectiveness of streaming work, in June 2023, the VET Department advised the Department's leaders to sign a Coordination Program on streaming orientation with the Department of Education and Training.
At that time, the program coordinated with 4 key contents including: Organizing career guidance activities, directing students after graduating from high school to study vocational education; exchanging information between the two sides periodically every 3 months; strengthening supervision of organizing high school cultural knowledge training at vocational education institutions; coordinating to improve the effectiveness of state management in the field of career guidance and vocational education.
After 1 year of effective implementation, on September 19, the Department of Vocational Education and Training advised the Department's leaders to coordinate in signing a coordination regulation with the Department of Education and Training, increasing the coordination work from 4 to 24 contents.
According to Mr. Nguyen Chi Thanh, since the coordination agreement was signed, the work of streaming students into vocational education according to the Prime Minister's Project "Vocational education and orientation of student streaming in general education for the period 2018-2025" has had a more positive trend.
By the end of 2023, the rate of secondary school graduates entering vocational education was 28.54%, higher than in 2022 (26.15%) and 2021 (27.13%). However, the average rate for the 2021-2024 period was only 26.19%, reaching only 65% of the target set in the project.

To increase the rate of students graduating from high school entering vocational education in the city, the Department of Vocational Education is proposing to implement many solutions.
In particular, Mr. Thanh suggested that information and propaganda work must be more diverse and have richer content; especially highlighting the value of human resources after graduating from vocational education in the socio-economic development of the city.
Second, the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs will coordinate with the Department of Education and Training to advise the City People's Committee to specify more specific quotas for admission to public grade 10 and vocational education.
Accordingly, the two sectors will propose a target of 65% for public grade 10, 15% for grade 10 at non-public high schools and Continuing Education Centers, and 20% for vocational education.
In addition, the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs also proposed adding the fourth option of vocational training institutions in addition to the three 10th grade admission options in the admission system operated by the Department of Education and Training.
Mr. Thanh said that in the coming time, the Department of Vocational Education will coordinate with universities to organize training courses on counseling and career guidance for homeroom teachers and teachers working in career guidance at secondary schools.
At the same time, the Department of Education and Training and vocational training institutions will also coordinate with each other to organize extracurricular activities for secondary school students to visit, learn about training models, provide direct consultation, and conduct psychological tests to determine each student's strengths. From there, provide career guidance for secondary school students to help them choose the right path early.
