Having severe stomach pain after a meal, the woman went to the doctor and discovered a fish bone had punctured her stomach and had to be hospitalized for emergency care.
On February 28, news from Hoan My Cuu Long General Hospital said that the hospital's doctors performed an endoscopy to remove a foreign object, a fish bone, that had punctured the stomach of a 51-year-old patient.
Previously, Ms. NTH (residing in Co Do District, Can Tho City) ate snakehead fish and after a day had severe abdominal pain above the navel. Her family took her to a private clinic for examination and medication but it did not help. Afterwards, Ms. H. was taken to Hoan My Cuu Long General Hospital in a state of severe abdominal pain.
After removing the fish bone, the patient returned to normal eating and drinking.
Here, the patient was examined and ordered an abdominal CT scan. This revealed a foreign body suspected to be a fish bone measuring 4.5 cm in length. The patient was diagnosed with a foreign body in the digestive tract and ordered a gastroscopy.
Through endoscopy, the doctor saw the fish bone fragment stuck firmly into the stomach wall. The endoscopy team used a foreign body grasper through the endoscope and carefully removed the fish bone safely. After removing the fish bone, the patient no longer had abdominal pain, was able to eat normally again and was discharged after 1 day of treatment.
Specialist Doctor Pham Huu Dung, Deputy Head of the Gastroenterology Department, Hoan My Cuu Long General Hospital, said that foreign objects such as fish bones can get stuck anywhere in the digestive tract and cause dangerous complications. When suspecting a foreign object, the victim should go to the hospital for examination and timely treatment.
