Rashford was again left out of the squad for MU's match against Tottenham in the quarter-finals of the English League Cup by coach Ruben Amorim. This is the second consecutive match that the 27-year-old striker has been left out of the squad, after the 2-1 derby win over Man City on December 15.
Coach Ruben Amorim explained: "Why was Rashford left out? In terms of the starting lineup, I chose players who I felt were ready to cope with the demands of playing a competitive and energetic match."
Without Rashford, coach Ruben Amorim continued to put his trust in young star Amad Diallo. MU had a rather dramatic match with Tottenham. After being down 3-0, the "Red Devils" shockingly scored consecutive goals to reduce the score to 2-3 thanks to Zirkzee and Diallo.
However, late in the match, mistakes by reserve goalkeeper Altay Bayindir allowed Son Heung-min to raise the score to 4-2 for Tottenham. In injury time, veteran centre-back Jonny Evans reduced the score to 3-4 for MU, but it was too late to change the situation.
Tottenham have qualified for the semi-finals of the League Cup and will face Liverpool, while Arsenal will face Newcastle in the other match. The first and second legs of the League Cup semi-finals will be played in early January and early February 2025.
Meanwhile, regarding striker Rashford's future, coach Ruben Amorim remains vague: "Of course, he is a MU player. Tomorrow (December 21), we will return to training, and Rashford will be there, preparing for the next match and you will see the starting lineup."
According to the Telegraph , MU will put Rashford on the transfer list in early 2025. Currently, there are 4 leading clubs in the Saudi Pro League ready to negotiate, besides Al Qadisah Club is also interested. MU wants to part with Rashford (the player has a contract until June 2028) for a fee of about 50 million USD.
Rashford recently spoke out after being repeatedly left out of the squad by coach Ruben Amorim, saying: "Ready for a challenge and a new chapter in my career, after a long time playing for MU".
