Amorim's coach seat is still shaky

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên22/02/2025

Visiting Everton's Goodison Park, coach Amorim and MU are under great pressure. Since succeeding coach Erik ten Hag, leading MU in November 2024, Mr. Amorim and the "Red Devils" have lost 9, drawn 3 and won only 9 matches. In the Premier League alone, the 40-year-old coach has a winning rate of 28.57% - the lowest figure among the 11 coaches who have led MU in the Premier League era, including those in temporary positions. The disappointing performance has caused MU to drop to 15th place with 29 points, 1 point behind Everton. If they cannot win this match, the Manchester team could even be narrowed down by the relegation group.

On the other side, the home team Everton is very confident. Since bringing back coach David Moyes, Everton has won four and drawn one of the last six matches. Although they have not been able to defeat MU in four direct clashes, the 61-year-old coach affirmed that this is the best time for him and his students to change history.

Coach Amorim is on the brink of being fired after a series of disappointing matches with MU

Everton suppressed MU, leading 2-0 after the first half

True to the statements of coach David Moyes, Everton created an overwhelming game and suppressed MU throughout the first half. The Goodison Park home team only had 45% possession but continuously had scoring opportunities, shooting 8 times (twice as many as MU). In the 19th minute, taking advantage of the chaotic ball in the penalty area, striker Beto kicked a close-range shot to open the score for Everton. Not stopping there, in the 39th minute, Abdoulaye Doucoure punished the indecision of MU's defense with an accurate header, doubling the match gap.

On the other hand, MU was deadlocked throughout the first half and did not have a single shot on target. The midfield with the trio of Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte played poorly, often losing the ball in inexplicable ways. When Everton attacked, MU's midfield did not have time to retreat to support the defense. Meanwhile, the attack with the duo of Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee was constantly in a state of "ball hunger", having to play with their backs to Everton's goal.

MU continues to have a disastrous match

Witnessing MU's disastrous performance in the first half, Daily Mail writer Harry Bamforth commented: "The developments on Everton's field accurately reflected MU's weak face in the 2024-2025 season. The "Red Devils" took to the field without any desire to win. MU were like programmed machines, running only to chase the ball. The 2 goals they conceded came too easily, the 5 defenders on the field had no connection with each other.

Worse, since the beginning of the match, the MU team has run out of ideas to attack. As usual, Mr. Amorim still holds his head, absent-mindedly on the sidelines. Perhaps the Portuguese coach now understands the pain that previous coaches like Mr. Erik ten Hag and Ole Solskjaer experienced.

Classic second half of MU

Trailing 2-0 after the first half, MU was forced to take risks and play offensively in the second half. However, the away team was still stuck and had difficulty approaching Everton's goal. It was only after Bruno Fernandes' moment of individual brilliance in the 72nd minute that MU was able to narrow the score to 1-2. Starting from a free kick from a distance of nearly 25 meters, the MU captain shot the ball with class, leaving goalkeeper Pickford rooted to the spot.

With the goal to reduce the score, MU's spirit was very high. In the 80th minute, Manuel Ugarte - one of the players who played the worst since the beginning of the match, appeared at the right time in front of the penalty area, scoring the equalizer 2-2 for MU.

The extra minutes witnessed an exciting duel between MU and Everton. In the 90+3 minute, Everton was unexpectedly awarded a penalty. However, VAR intervened, overturned the penalty and helped MU end the match with a 2-2 draw.

MU had a lucky draw against Everton

Having escaped defeat at Everton, MU has 30 points after 26 rounds. The "Red Devils" are still not safe as they are only 13 points away from the relegation zone (with 12 rounds left). At the same time, according to The Guardian , the future of coach Amorim is also being seriously considered by MU's leadership after a series of disappointing matches.
