European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen warned on October 1 that the continent is "losing ground" in the global technology race and must increase spending on research to "turn the tide".

At the 70th anniversary of the CERN physics laboratory, Ms. von der Leyen said that the European Union (EU) needs to consider scientific research and innovation as a top priority in economic development.
The EC President also stressed the important role of the CERN physics laboratory in helping Europe restore its scientific standing, especially after the post-World War II brain drain.
The head of the EC said that, "like 70 years ago, we are living in a period of increased geopolitical competition".
According to Ms. von der Leyen, Europe is participating in a global race for technologies that will shape the future, from clean technology, quantum, to artificial intelligence (AI) and fusion energy.
“Although Europe has more researchers than the US and China, we are losing ground in many areas,” von der Leyen asserted.
Over the past two decades, the EU's share of global patents has halved, from 30% to 15%.
The EC President has said that "it is time to turn things around" and that the EU needs to increase spending on scientific research in its next budget.
CERN laboratory located in the suburbs of Geneva (Switzerland) has the mission of exploring the universe and expanding human knowledge.
CERN currently has 2,500 employees and welcomes around 17,000 scientists to work each year.
