Colombia's Risk Management Council has declared a state of natural disaster in the central region of Meta, after heavy rains fell in different areas in recent days.
The regional Civil Defense Agency said 842 families had been affected, and that precautions were being taken to avoid further damage. Meta Governor Rafaela Cortés chaired an extraordinary meeting to discuss response measures amid warnings of the La Nina phenomenon.
According to Colombia's Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Research (Ideam), the country is in a transitional phase between the peak of El Nino and the onset of La Nina. Experts predict that the La Nina weather phenomenon will begin to appear between July and September, and will strengthen mainly in the second half of the year.
