Series of emergency sanctions

According to CNN , in the early morning of January 26 (Vietnam time), US President Donald Trump issued an emergency tax, applied immediately, initially 25%, on Colombia and will increase to 50% after a week. The reason is that this country has refused US military flights to deport Colombians back to their country.

In addition, Mr. Trump also imposed a series of other sanctions, such as travel bans and visa revocations for Colombian government officials, along with emergency banking and financial sanctions.

In response, Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced that he would also impose a 25% tariff on the US. Previously, Mr. Petro refused deportation flights on the grounds that immigrants should be returned with dignity and dignity, instead of being treated as if they were criminals.

On his first day in office, Mr. Trump issued an executive order imposing a 25% tax on Canada and Mexico and an additional 10% penalty on imports from China from February 1 because these are countries with large trade surpluses with the US.

On his social network Truth Social, Mr. Trump also affirmed that “these measures are just the beginning” (with Colombia).

Trump’s heavy sanctions on Colombia are considered an “example” for not taking back migrants. This move forces countries to be more cautious about Trump’s policies so as not to suffer economic damage.

This is the first time Mr. Trump has used economic pressure to force other countries to comply with his plan to deport illegal immigrants en masse since he took office last week, on January 20.

Previously, Mr. Trump launched many economic policies to protect national interests, from declaring an energy emergency, reducing domestic taxes, and increasing import taxes from a number of countries.

To address global hotspots, Mr. Trump's priority is also economic strikes.

The Trump administration on January 25 also ordered a freeze on nearly all US foreign aid, except for military assistance to Israel, Egypt and emergency food aid.

The move shows the determination of the US to prioritize national interests of Mr. Trump. With its wide-ranging impact, this decision could cause shockwaves to countries receiving US aid, including Ukraine.

Trump's first victory makes countries wary

Immediately after Mr. Trump's decision, the President of Colombia "retaliated" and also announced high tariffs on imported goods from the US.

However, President Petro soon said he was willing to allow US civilian flights (instead of military planes) carrying deported migrants to land, as long as those on board were not treated "like criminals".

Later, according to CNN , the White House issued a statement saying that the Colombian government had “agreed to President Trump’s terms, which include accepting unrestricted repatriation of all illegal aliens, including on US military aircraft, without limitation or delay.”

This also means that the Trump administration will suspend sanctions.

With the conflict in Ukraine, on January 21, Mr. Trump also unexpectedly threatened sanctions and tariffs on Russia if Moscow did not negotiate an end to the conflict in Ukraine. This is a new pressure on the Russian government, contrary to the friendly attitude towards Russian President Vladimir Putin in recent years.

For Russia, military spending over the past three years has led to high inflation and economic stagnation. Sanctions could make things worse. Mr. Trump has realized that he can put pressure not only on Ukraine but also on Russia, to force both sides to make concessions and end the war.

Responding to Mr Trump's threat of sanctions, the Kremlin said it "did not see anything new" but was ready for dialogue in a spirit of mutual respect with the new US president.

On January 27, the Kremlin appeared impatient when it confirmed that it had not yet received any response from the US about arranging a meeting between Mr. Putin and Mr. Trump, even though Russia had previously sent out signals of readiness to meet.

As for China, Beijing also reported on a phone call that took place between the Chinese President and Mr. Trump before the new White House owner took office. Mr. Xi Jinping expressed hope for a good start in relations with the United States.

According to Bloomberg , after the Colombia incident, the Chinese Foreign Ministry affirmed on January 27 that China will accept undocumented Chinese citizens in the US. There were about 210,000 undocumented Chinese immigrants in the US in 2022, according to Washington.

President Trump makes a series of decisions, the trade and technology war will be fierce. Mr. Donald Trump signed a series of decrees right after his inauguration speech, declaring to bring America into a new era, using all resources to help the American people get rich and the country strong... In addition, there are many billionaires behind the new administration.
