The information was shared at the 4th ASEAN Conference on 5G technology recently held in Quang Ninh, within the framework of Vietnam International Digital Week 2023 taking place from December 12-15 in Ha Long City, Quang Ninh Province. This is an annual event in ASEAN initiated by Vietnam. The focus of this year's Conference is to discuss the roadmap for 5G deployment in ASEAN countries.

According to Ms. Atsuko Okuda, the successful deployment of 5G technology requires a comprehensive approach, considering technical, socio-cultural and economic factors. Robust network infrastructure and strategic spectrum allocation below 1GHz are highly appreciated in supporting the global and Asia-Pacific 5G deployment.

In fact, countries in the region have been proactive in allocating and strategically using spectrum, from mid-band frequencies below 7GHz to high frequencies such as 26GHz and 6GHz, to support widespread 5G deployment.

Collaboration with innovation labs and universities is also emphasized, aiming to increase awareness, education, and testing of the potential of 5G technology.

However, the situation and direction of 5G deployment in different countries are somewhat different. While some countries are in the development stage or have finished testing, China is at an advanced stage, expanding LTE frequencies and accumulating an impressive database of more than 50,000 5G applications over the past 6 years.

Countries also have diverse deployment targets. For example, Cambodia focuses on coverage in specific areas, Malaysia allows other network providers to enter the market, and China diversifies into multi-industry applications and international cooperation.

The speakers focused on key aspects of the 5G roadmap, including 5G development strategies of ASEAN countries and the world, standardization, network deployment, security, interoperability with other technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and proposed a 5G deployment roadmap for ASEAN countries to refer to and deploy according to each country's capabilities and actual needs.
