Recently, on TikTok, a clip appeared of a group of inspectors entering a cinema to check the age of the audience during a screening of the movie Mai. by Tran Thanh
In the clip, there are people in police uniforms and some in plain clothes.
Police entering the theater to check is "legal"
Responding to Tuoi Tre Online on the morning of February 28, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thanh Trung - head of marketing and management of Cinestar Quoc Thanh cinema complex (HCMC) - confirmed that the above clip was filmed during the screening of the movie Mai at 7:00 p.m. on February 26.
Mr. Thanh Trung also said that the result of the inspection that day was that there were 169 moviegoers in the theater, none of whom were under the age of 18.
Cinestar Quoc Thanh Cinema is located on Nguyen Trai Street, Nguyen Cu Trinh Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.
In the past, the inspection team went to Cinestar theater twice to check the age of the audience. That was the inspection of the screening on February 24 by the People's Committee of District 1, and the inspection on February 26 by the People's Committee of Nguyen Cu Trinh ward.
Cinestar Quoc Thanh representative said that up to now, there have been several inspection teams entering the cinema to check its operations, but rarely checking the age of the audience watching the movies.
After Tran Thanh's movie Mai was released and there was information that audiences under 18 years old were still allowed to go to the cinema to watch the movie, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced that it would inspect this matter and the delegations came to work very actively.
"This is in accordance with the law, the inspection took place normally, there was no problem, however during the inspection some customers were not satisfied.
Some people are curious and interested, but some people feel interrupted while watching the movie.
Not only Cinestar but also other cinema complexes in Ho Chi Minh City and other provinces have been inspected a lot recently" - Mr. Thanh Trung said.
Everyone must participate, not just Ho Chi Minh City.
Chief Inspector of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Le Thanh Liem told Tuoi Tre Online that on the morning of February 28, there were initial inspection results in the case of students still freely going to the theater to watch the movie Mai even though the movie was labeled 18+.
According to the latest information from Mr. Liem, "The Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City reported the inspection results by phone, the department has handled two theater clusters that violated the above situation."
When asked specifically about the theater cluster, the Ministry Inspectorate representative said: "That's all I know, there is no specific report yet, we have to wait and see."
Regarding the police entering the theater to check the age of the audience watching the movie Mai in Ho Chi Minh City, the representative of the Ministry Inspectorate did not comment because "The Ministry Inspectorate has assigned the inspectorates of the departments to supervise and check".
Mr. Liem also added: "Regarding this matter, all inspectors of departments - not just the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City - must work regularly, not only when there is an incident."
Previously, speaking to Tuoi Tre Online on February 22, the Ministry's Chief Inspector said that as soon as there was public opinion regarding the fact that in Ho Chi Minh City, students were still freely going to the cinema to watch the movie Mai, the Ministry's Inspectorate directed the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports to immediately take action.
Mr. Liem informed: "The inspector of this department will be responsible for investigating, checking, requesting theaters to report information, and then reporting back to the ministry."
According to the Ministry Inspectorate representative, cinemas must comply with regulations and ensure that the age of admission to the film is as labeled. Tran Thanh's film Mai is labeled 18+, students under 18 years old are not allowed to enter.
Regarding the information that some cinemas in Ho Chi Minh City let audiences under 18 years old into the movie Mai without requiring them to show identification papers, the Chief Inspector of the Ministry said that if such violations are found during the inspection, the Inspectorate of the Ministry will handle them.
Accordingly, the form of handling is specifically regulated in the regulations on film dissemination in cinemas and film dissemination on cyberspace.
"The cinema manager will be responsible for controlling the age of moviegoers. If there is a violation, we will handle it according to the law without covering it up," said Mr. Le Thanh Liem.
