Captain Vu Van Cuong is one of 67 typical collectives and individuals nationwide studying and following Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality and style in 2023. He was surprised to receive this good news while performing his duties at the border. Present in Hanoi, attending the honoring ceremony on November 2, he was even more surprised when he was chosen to represent typical examples nationwide to go to the Mausoleum to report to Uncle Ho about their outstanding achievements in studying and following President Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality and style; the feats of the armed forces on the national defense and security front; the achievements of typical examples in socio-economic development, preserving and promoting national cultural identity; Party building...

Talking to me right after the event, Captain Cuong was still moved by the great honor he had received. He shared: “I am very touched, honored and proud that one of the typical examples nationwide in studying and following Ho Chi Minh's moral example, was able to represent the typical examples to report to Uncle Ho.”

Captain Vu Van Cuong confided: “The biggest motivation that helps me overcome all difficulties and dangers is Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality, and style. Besides, I always receive attention and direction from commanders at all levels, and professional guidance from superior specialized agencies. In particular, my family is always a solid support for me to work and contribute with peace of mind.”

Captain Cuong always reminds himself to work, perform, and contribute in a way that is worthy of his duty and responsibility to the Party, the Fatherland, the Army, and the people. Pa Thom Border Guard Station is stationed in a border area that is complex in terms of criminal activities, especially drug-related crimes. Captain Cuong is an officer who directly fights against drug crimes, so he always faces danger because the criminals are very reckless and daring, ready to use "hot" weapons to madly fight back against the task force.

From 2019 to present, Captain Cuong has always upheld the spirit of responsibility, pioneering, exemplary, ready to face difficulties and dangers; intelligent, brave, directly detecting, participating in arresting, investigating, and handling: 290 projects, cases/377 subjects, drug crimes, seizing evidence of more than 600kg of various types of drugs. Typical projects are DB1221p, DB1221p2, DB622, A222, DB223...

“The most impressive of these was Project DB1221p2, where I was assigned to directly arrest a subject transporting a large quantity of drugs from Laos to Vietnam. During the arrest, the subject used a knife to fight back fiercely in an attempt to escape. At that time, I resolutely controlled and arrested the subject, ensuring the safety of myself and my teammates. The evidence seized at the scene was 72 heroin cakes. Expanding the investigation, on the same day, my teammates and I arrested 2 more ringleaders of the ring, seizing 472 million VND from them. Among these 2 subjects, one subject had 2 especially dangerous drug arrest warrants. When we arrested him, he offered a price: “If you release him, he will send someone with 3 billion VND.” Imbued with Uncle Ho's teaching: "As a cadre, integrity must be the top priority", my teammates and I resolutely arrested and handled the subjects in accordance with the law, not letting criminals escape" - Captain Cuong said.

In addition to the “sugar-coated bullets”, Captain Cuong had to face life and death many times during his mission. He recalled: “When participating in the fight against Project DB223, I was assigned to command the main capture team and directly worked with my teammates to ambush and arrest 3 subjects transporting drugs across the border from Laos to Vietnam. During the project, my teammates and I had to deploy an ambush for many days in rugged mountainous terrain, in heavy rain, with lots of mosquitoes and leeches. When the 3 drug transporters entered the ambush formation, my teammates and I approached to arrest them. When the leader discovered that he was being surrounded by the Border Guard, he pulled out his gun to fight back. However, with experience and decisive action, I quickly controlled the subjects, ensuring the safety of the whole team. The project was a great success. We arrested all 3 suspects in the ring, seized 7 heroin cakes, 1kg of crystal meth and 1 gun.

With the above outstanding achievements, from 2019 to 2023, Captain Cuong was recognized by all levels and awarded 16 certificates of merit. In 2022, he was honored to receive the Third Class Military Exploit Medal from the President; the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army awarded him a Certificate of Merit, as a Promising Young Face of the Army in 2022. In 2023, he was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Ministry of Public Security for his outstanding achievements in drug prevention and control in 2023.

There is a memory that Captain Cuong will forever remember in his heart: the advice of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong when he presented him with a portrait of Uncle Ho at the Party Central Committee headquarters. "When I went up to receive the award presented by the General Secretary, I didn't know what to say, then he looked at me and said, your name is Cuong, you must be strong, try to overcome all difficulties, and complete the tasks assigned by the Party and the State. At that time, I was very moved, with tears in my eyes because of the General Secretary's deep concern. Through that advice, I told myself to live, work, fight and contribute to the Fatherland and the people" - Captain Cuong said.
