Within the framework of the VFBC project deployed in Quang Binh, FFI is responsible for implementing and monitoring project activities in the area of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park (PN-KB NP) and Dong Chau-Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve (KDTTN), including: Promoting conservation-friendly production and business for forest-dependent communities; strengthening the management of special-use forests and protection forests; enhancing the effectiveness of the law enforcement system against forest and wildlife crimes; reducing consumption demand through behavioral change methods.
During the 3 years of implementing the task in our province, the VFBC project and FFI have helped strengthen the capacity of PN-KB National Park and Dong Chau-Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve, organized 49 training courses and workshops on management and knowledge, skills of biodiversity conservation; supported the development of a sustainable forest management plan and an ecotourism project of Dong Chau-Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve (approved by the Provincial People's Committee); supported the organization of the international workshop on 20 years of PN-KB National Park; provided smart equipment for forest protection patrol work.
In addition, FFI supported the installation of 14 propaganda signs and organized 2 initial and final biodiversity surveys with 157 camera trap stations across the entire area of PNKB National Park and Dong Chau-Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve. This is the largest-scale systematic camera trap biodiversity survey program ever in PNKB National Park and Dong Chau-Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve.
The VFBC project and FFI have strengthened coordination to effectively implement the law enforcement system against acts of encroachment on forests and wildlife in the province, such as: Supporting the operation of 5 interdisciplinary teams in Minh Hoa, Bo Trach, Quang Ninh, Le Thuy districts and Dong Hoi city; signing 29 agreements on wildlife protection and 424 commitments to say no to wildlife products; supporting the operation of 14 patrol teams to protect and remove traps in PN-KB National Park and Dong Chau-Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve; conducting 18,486 patrol days; removing and destroying 6,001 wildlife traps; disseminating and guiding legal regulations, and conducting surprise inspections of businesses related to forest products and wildlife.
Mr. Bach Thanh Hai, Director of Dong Chau-Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve, shared that in 2024 alone, FFI has supported and coordinated with the unit to carry out 3 communication campaigns on wildlife protection and biodiversity; applied Smart Mobile tools in wildlife protection and biodiversity patrols (conducting 1,730 patrol days, with a distance of 15,250km, 333 traps detected and collected); deployed field surveys and investigations and is developing an ecotourism and resort project for Dong Chau-Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve to submit to competent authorities for appraisal and approval.
With the cooperation of FFI, biodiversity conservation activities in our province have had many positive changes, contributing to the effective implementation of Action Plan No. 78/KH-UBND, dated January 17, 2023 of the People's Committee of Quang Binh province on biodiversity conservation to 2030, with a vision to 2050... |
In particular, the VFBC project and FFI also supported the organization of communication events to reduce the demand for consumption of products originating from wild animals through behavioral change methods, specifically: Supporting the operation of 8 community conservation communication groups with 207 members; providing 8 loudspeakers and uniforms; organizing 22 community-level events to reach and convey messages to 56 villages/hamlets; organizing 2 communication campaigns in response to World Wildlife Day in 2023 and 2024. In addition, FFI has installed 272 posters, 3 "Wild Coffee" models to convey messages of reducing consumption demand, educating on wildlife conservation at restaurants, hotels and tourist attractions in Dong Hoi City and Phong Nha Town (Bo Trach); propagating "say no to wild animal meat" for union members, youth and students of Quang Binh University and high schools...
VFBC Project Coordinator Trinh Minh Long said that FFI is a prestigious international organization with professional operations, so the sub-components of the project have been implemented very effectively, with practical significance, in line with the policy of socialization in management, forest protection and biodiversity conservation, receiving consensus from local authorities and people in the project area. In the coming time, through sponsored project programs, the Provincial Forest Protection Department hopes to receive the support of FFI to contribute to improving the quality and biodiversity of forest ecosystems in Quang Binh province.
