(QBĐT) - Diligent, industrious and sharp in production, Ms. Phan Thi Luong, Quyet Tien village, Ham Ninh commune (Quang Ninh) boldly invested in building a comprehensive farm model, earning hundreds of millions of dong in profit each year.

Dare to think, dare to do

Visiting the farm of Ms. Phan Thi Luong's family, before our eyes was a large farm with an area of over 2 hectares covered with green fruit trees and a free-range chicken farm with thousands of chickens.

Ms. Luong said that, realizing that the natural conditions in her hometown have many strengths for developing livestock farming, she and her husband have cherished the plan to invest in building a chicken farming model. With the support of the Farmers' Association of Quang Ninh district, she and her husband went to Van Ninh commune to visit the chicken farming model, learn about breeds and learn farming techniques. After returning, she boldly invested in purchasing machinery, building barns and starting to raise free-range chickens.

Initially, she bought 2,000 chickens for testing, then continued to buy 3,000 more to multiply the flock. “I thought raising chickens would be easy, but it’s not. Chickens are animals that are very sensitive to the weather and have many potential risks of disease. Therefore, disease prevention and control for chickens must be done very well. Every month, technical staff will periodically check the development of the chicken flock as well as strictly control disease prevention and control,” Ms. Luong shared.

To raise chickens effectively, in addition to the accumulated experience, the couple also researched documents and learned more about techniques for raising, caring for, preventing and treating diseases in chickens. Therefore, all stages from selecting breeds, brooding chickens to vaccinating and caring for chickens are carried out according to technical procedures, ensuring safety in raising chickens.

According to Ms. Luong, chicken farming is a long-standing profession and is chosen by many people because chickens are quite easy to raise, have a large market demand, and the initial investment cost is not as high as raising pigs, buffaloes, cows, etc. However, most households that raise chickens often follow the traditional method, and few people follow the method of raising clean chickens.

To raise livestock effectively and sustainably, right from the start of building the model, she determined to raise clean livestock from the stage of selecting breeds, food sources to how to take care of the chicken flock. Chicken feed is made from corn, cassava, snails, vegetables... completely saying no to industrial feed. To maintain a stable food source, she invested in buying a chicken feed making machine, the raw materials are purchased from localities in and outside the province; the apple snails are imported from local households.

In addition, chickens are raised naturally in large gardens, so the meat is firm and delicious. Currently, her farm maintains more than 5,000 chickens of various types, including: H'Mong chickens, super-laying chickens, ant-ta chickens, sugarcane chickens and laying hens. Within just 5 months of starting to raise them, her family has sold more than 2,000 breeding chickens and meat chickens, and 120,000 eggs to the market. Notably, there were times when her farm did not have enough breeding chickens and eggs to sell to people.

Towards large scale farming

Despite her young age, Ms. Luong has dared to think and act, taking advantage of the available local conditions combined with creative approaches to bring high economic efficiency. “Farmers who stick to their village land to live, know how to organize production properly, will never be poor. My husband and I try to build a career for our children so that they do not have to leave the country to work far away but still have jobs and stable incomes, ensuring their lives,” Ms. Luong said.

Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Quang Ninh District Nguyen Quang Tuyen said: "The free-range chicken farming model is developing in many rural areas, initially bringing high economic efficiency to many households. To raise free-range chickens economically, farmers must learn techniques and experience and apply them to practice in each household. Ms. Luong's free-range chicken farming model is currently developing well and bringing high economic efficiency. In the coming time, the association will actively encourage members to apply technical advances in production, and replicate clean and safe farming models in the area."

Sharing her experience in production development, Ms. Luong said that the most important thing in animal husbandry is to choose breeds that have been tested and replicated. The feed used is common, easy to prepare, low cost but high nutritional value. The important factor is to know how to apply science and technology correctly to bring high economic efficiency.

In just a short time, but with constant efforts, Ms. Luong has succeeded in raising livestock, getting rich on difficult land with a revenue of more than 400 million VND/5 months (after deducting expenses); creating regular jobs for 2 workers with an average income of over 8 million VND/month and many seasonal workers in the area.

“From the results achieved, my family will continue to strive, actively apply scientific and technical advances to improve the quality and efficiency of the model, increase income, and contribute to accelerating the socio-economic development of the locality. Currently, my family is completing the barn to test raising bamboo rats and plans to expand the production scale in the near future to increase the total flock of chickens to 20,000; thereby aiming to build a clean chicken brand, bringing clean agricultural products to consumers,” Ms. Luong shared.
